Got back from a weeks holiday in Cairns with the wife on Saturday.
Only did one fishing trip, as the weather was crap up to Thursday. We went out on the 50’ Aqua Cat on Friday, the conditions as you can see were perfect and we fished a lot of different spots up to about 40k from the mainland.
The skipper was a grumpy old sod, he was constantly having a go at people about their fishing skills. We never stayed in one spot for more than 10-15 minuets, which meant we spent 90% of the time on the move. I don’t know why as most of the marks we stopped at were producing fish.
There were only two marks where we needed to move, one we never got a bite and the other we were getting sharked big time. I got sharked twice and lost a real thumper of a fish, which had me pumping hard to get it up to the boat. I never knew what they were as all that was left was the shredded end of my line. One guy did get a nice Spangled Emperor head onboard.
The biggest fish taken was a cod of about 8kg, the biggest we caught was the wife’s 4.5kg Chinaman, which as you will know had to go back, as well as a few reds and Spangled Emperor up to about 3kg. Kept one 50cm red for tea, very nice.
