View Full Version : Tohatsu motors
Ok guys just after some advice. Im looking at buying (finally im ready to) a 4.5m Poly CC. I am liking one but it has a 50hp Tohatsu TLDI (or something like that lol) Anyone actually own a poly with a tohatsu 2 stroke on it. I assume that is a 2 stroke motor. I know plenty about Yammies, honda and suzuki as Iv owned them in the past but ill be honest.......I know JACK about the tohatsu. I have heard they are noisy and have poor resale but im not sure.
ALso Im interested to know how they adjust there trolling speed if anyone knows this that would be great. I use to have a merc that dropped 2 cylinders for trolling. A real pain in the bum so I want to make sure the tohatsu doesnt drop a cylinder or something to achieve this.
Appreciate any help.
cheers Jas!

Welcome to the forum Jas.
There are heaps of 4.5 owners here on the site so hopefully some one runs one already.
The TLDI motors are direct injection 2 strokes so they should be good on fuel & Tohatsu have a good name for being reliable, so I dont think you can go wrong with them.
Most Polycraft boats seem to like max HP so maybe look at the 60Hp.

Hi mate. My old boat had the std carburetted 2005 oil injected Mariner/Tohastu 40hp. Plenty of grunt, but rough at idle. Loved the revs, but just a pity the hull didn't when out in the open ocean too bangey. Anyways from new the main drama I had with the donk was electrics. Coils went, and then the CDI unit (ignition control computer). These went during break in about the 35hr mark. All up this work was about $700 - but covered by new engine warranty thankfully. Not that much confidence built in the engine over the 3 years I had it as a result of the bad start, but I guess looking back she was pretty reliable (always started first try), very fuel efficient (50km to a 25l tank !!). The trolling speed on mine was adjustable on the tiller arm. Underneath was a little thumb wheel that you tighten when at the correct speed. Suss under the tiller and it may be the same on the TLDI. Good luck !
Morning Jas,
I have a 50 Tohatsu on my 4.55 CC, traded a 40hp mariner (on the boat when bought) for it and I'm delighted with the result. Being injected 2 stroke it is very economical, far better than the 40, a tad noisier than a 4 stroke but is lighter and cheaper to service. The troll speed works by pushing the ignition key in, it jumps the idle speed from 700 to 800 to 900, works well. On my 4.55 it has power to spare, I'm fitting smart trims to help the hole shot a bit.
As far as reliability, I chose another Tohatsu because they are built like a brick out-house, I have an eight horse that is now 30 years old and always starts on the second pull, I have found them bullet-proof. They also have a diagnostic chip, if you take it to a Tohatsu dealer they can tell whether it was run in properly, has ever been over heated etc.
If you buy the boat and do not have a manual for the motor I could photo copy mine and send it to you ............ cost you a beer if we ever meet up !
Cheers

Hey Jayro,
Tohatsu motors are good performers! Their adjustable idle is fantastic for fisho's wanting to troll at slower speed.
Their resale reputation is only due to the many Monday's Experts who dont know shyte from clay!
I'd have one tomorrow no problems at all!
yep what glenn said a mate of mine [arnie dog] runs a 40hp on his boat and it takes a fair flogging, the motor is 7 years old with countless hours on the clock and is still running strong.

My first motor was a 55hp Tohatsu and it was tough but that was 30 years ago. Currently have an 18hp at work and it has stood up to the abuse that the students have given it. They are owned by Nissan and often make powerheads for Yamaha and Mercury/Mariner.

idling is controlled eletronically- no dropping of cylinders
around qld 6 yrs ago most pro workboats were replacing all the yammies with tohies-from waht i hear they still mostly going
then they dont care about resale -just reliability
if the price is right get it m8
Hi Jayro, I had a two stroke 40 tohatsu for some time on a tinny and I found it very reliable and no more noisy than other two strokes. I have ordered a 50 tldi for my new challenger SC and do so after quite a bit of research. The TLDI is quiet, powerfull and best of all approx 50% less thirsty than your average two stroke. I agree with the other's in that you should go maximum HP rating with Polly boats to offset any weight concerns.
