View Full Version : Meet and Greets for 2010
Ok so Darwin has bombed, excuse the expression, but there is still some considerable interest in getting together for a fish and a beer.
I have created this poll to find interest in how many are willing to attend in a more central (read cheap Doug) alternative location.
You can select more than one option
I'm just wondering whether we are being a bit ambitious trying to have a national get-together as the first event.
Perhaps we ought to arrange some state/regional events first so that a few guys get to know each other locally first. It might make it easier to then set up joint travel plans to a national event. Unfortunately, the regional usergroups don't seem to have survived in this incarnation of the forum but they would have made a good starting point for the regional M&G's.
BTW, I believe this may already be happening on a town/city basis but we just need to expand it a bit.
To kick things off, how about the Tassie members getting together at somewhere like St Helens for a weekend?
Edit: BTW, I am the one who voted Neither in the poll and the above is my suggestion.
Good point Barry - the slothful, incompetent admin on this board used to put us into little groups by geography. Why can't that be resurrected? It would be a start in organising regional meets. At least those in one area would know where the others are.
Are you listening up there in fairy land?:D

Hervey Bay for me, Tax write off baby!!! Someone gonna save me a spot on thier boat but? i'll bring the beer, beef jerky and poor humour
Yes there were regional / state groups but they never really took off. There was in initial flurry of activity but then they died and were hardly used.
For this reason, i didnt continue them on here.
Barry, I agree that the national thing is probably too big to expect, but I think this way having a couple of meetings throughout the year will reduce the impact. Some people will only go to one, some go to both.

PS There is a significant date in March which we could celebrate in St Helens, I wonder if Pete can remember it.

I would be more than happy to talk this over with Polycraft if the need arises?

For the Queenslanders:
What about somewhere near Rocky? Yeppoon area maybe? It's about a day's drive from Brisvegas and from the great north.
I'd personally like to attend one in mid NSW, maybe around the Newcastle area, but not in mid-winter.
And my Mrs wants to go to Tassie........I'm not saying another word......laugh1
Travelling to Darwin was never really in my plans, so Newcastle (or more specificaly lake Macquarie area) would be my pick. We have attempted a few local area get-togethers here which were poorly attended, despite everyones best intentions. Just human nature I suppose.
Best time (fishing and weather wise) for this area is Feb. march, April.
If you've never been here, it isn't the industrial Chernobyl you may imagine, quite the opposite.
On a nother more serious note, could Doug please change his avatar...it's giving me nightmares.

I have a fly fishing commitment on the mainland over the March long weekend and I am currently trying to determine what other commitments I have in February (waiting on minutes of a meeting which was held in Devonport last night) but will nominate a date as soon as I am able.2thumbsup

Cool Barry.
I would think that the Long weekend would be booked where we usually stay so you fly weekend in the big island wont be a problem.
Just let us know & we will see what we can do.

I'm with Chin as Lake Macquarie would be a good location :) :) :)
plenty of spots to fish inside the lake or outside and even in winter the water temps down the southern end of the lake are still 22C + plus I wouldn't have to send the donation rod by friggen courier so it will be safe :)
cheers, Jan.
Pete and other Tassie poly people, make a get together in April 'cos I'll be down there then, week following Easter, 4 - 12'ish.
Let's get some Tuna pete!

Rocky has many options:
Pelagics and red fish (trout etc) out the front near keppels, more red fish (red emporer, nannies etc.) out further given the right boat
Awoonga dam 1.5hrs south, BIG barra
Plenty of estuaries and river fishing, salmon, barra etc
Even a few freshwater local creeks/lagoons that are known places of holding barra, some big ones too!

Got one or two spots you could throw my way Mitch? I'll be passing through Rocky in a while, on the way to NQ. I'm planning on river stuff mainly but would love to get out further if the weather is onside. Probably only in vicinity of Rocky for a day of fishing, then heading further north for more fishing before stopping i Cairns. I can do the same for some Cairns marks should you come up sometime.

2011 meet and greet could possibly be Cooktown for QLD members? Great fishing, nice little town. Anyone that doesn't want to tow their boat that far, I'm sure there would be some vacant spots in some boats?!? I'd be more than happy to share some marks with attendees..once I spend a few long weekends finding the 90cm LMN and Red Emperor's :) Yes I'll post some pics...
Around September/October is good while not too hot. If the wind is blowing its ring out, then there are two large rivers to fish/mudcrab..
Thoughts?!? How about a penciled in date for October 2011? Closest large reef is only 4nm out from the ramp... well two of them actually...just pick one...tempting huh?

As far as river is concerned, i have not fished it in years so probably not the best info. The rock bars in town between the bridges seem to do alright. also the southside bank just before town there is a creek mouth and old jetties that seem to do alright as well. Rocky outcrops etc seem to be good in the river.
If you could get to yeppoon then it opens up a multitude of different options again. There is all the islands, some reefs further out and further north too. Unfortunately don't have any marks on me, got some at home somewhere. Ususally just go by the eye and sounder haha
Will see if i can dig something up for you. What dates will it be?

about a month mate. no set date yet. maybe i'll head to yepoon then? sounds good.
Depends on what your wanting to try catching. salmon barra etc. in the river. Macks, cod, sweetlip etc. out of yeppoon.
Will send you a pm if i can find any of the marks, i think the ones we had in the GPS went with it and the boat

Ok thanks Mitch, no pressure mate. I can always explore and watch the sounder.
Depends on the weather, if nice sweetlip and macks etc, otherwise in the rivers.
Cheers.

Now to suggest a another different location -> http://www.bowenfamilyfishingclassic.com/
We should all turn up to a fishing comp.. Double whammie, poly meet and fishing meet.
Gives people three weeks to get organise. Start of QLD school holidays too (so roads will be packed unfortunately). I would suggest turning up some time Thursday.
If you want some big Spanish Mackeral bring your own ribbonfish, they will sell out locally before hand.
Anyone does want to come up I'll provide all the GPS marks I have. Just because I haven't caught fish on them myself, says more about my fishing ability than the quality of the marks.
Hopefully the weather will be good this year, because the last two.. Grrr.
If anyone wants to come up and contact a local poly guy, PM me..

Forums can be quite daunting. In the real world the words come with, tone of voice, facial expression and the mood of the conversation. You don’t have any of that in the printed word.

Yup, not many spots that cant be reached by boat at the moment. You could try down the side of my place, or perhaps even the park out the back.
