Hey gang,

Chasing some advice. Got what I have been told is a 130l poly tank in my boat. Have filled it twice from approx 1/2 tank goin by the tank gauge. Put about 60L in. The pressure valve has blown fuel when only putting about 5L or so in from half full. Let that settle then vapor lock has been a bit of a drama to fill the remainder, been going slow. When boat gauge has read full I stop filling.

Have then had fuel leak out of the tank and into the bilge ! Lifted the floor and no obvious cracks or whatever over the top of the tank. Is there another valve or something internal within the tank that could be leaking? When tank gets below this full mark she's fine in al sorts of chop not a drop spilt. Could the overflow breather be leaking along the line? This morning tank was fine, then I came home from work and bilge had about half litre of juice in it, presumably as day warmed up fuel expanded and has leaked?

any advice etc appreciated. Surely this is not a normal thing, unless it's an overfill problem on my account?

Cheers,
Ado

ADO,

There is a fair bit of info on the old site on fuel breather issues - essentially the hoses are longer than they need to be and fuel gets caught in the loops leading to fuel smells, venting at full etc. If you have fuel leaks in the boat i would be checking the connections for both breathers and fuel in and out to motor for leaks.
Cheers,
Remy

Just been through a similar situation with our 5.3, was getting fuel from no where for a few trips then standing there one day with floor up and full tank, scratching my nut and stepped on corner of tank to see fuel coming out around sender seal. Removed, cleaned and sealed again and no fuel prob since.
Hope it helps Polyphonic

Sounds to me as if you have a leak around one of the fittings in the tank like Polyphonic has already said. I think there was one member who had a split in the moulded in "V" in the tank to act as ribs.

Get some "Stag" sealant to put on any connections you redo as it is fuel proof. Dont use silicon.

I had trouble filling my tank as the breather hoses were too long & laying on the bottom of the boat & would fuel lock.

I had to put the camera down through the hatch in under the rear seat to get these pics.

I took the cutting board off on the port side where the fuel fittings come through the transom & used some wire ties to tie the fuel lines up so they rise all the way to the breathers & I can now fill the boat without any problems at all.

don't worry Ado it's a common problem with the 5.3m. i too have the same issue. pretty poor of polycraft to not have fixed it yet really. Another job to do this month while she is land locked for repairs

Thanks boys. found some of the old posts on the other site - interesting reading. Sorry for going over the old ground again. Pete - lifted floor again. The fuel tank around the gauge sender is stained, the stickers are all fuel damaged and when I lean on the tank fuel was seeping out (with a full tank). I think this is the only leakage as hoses and clamps all looked sound and no leaks under the same crude pressure test method. It's affixed with 5 x stainless screws so will undo have a gander and reseal with the product you suggested. Will also mod the breather hose whilst in there. Lifted the baitboard and lo and behold there is about 300-400mm free play in the hose. Will take pix when light permits and see how the repair goes. Thanks for the assistance again fellas MUCH appreciated and hopefully just another of the relatively minor "quirks" these tubs have :-)
