Nice one Chin, It doesnt matter who was on the end of the rod the "boat" caught fish. The only time I ever went bill fishing was with some blokes I worked with at a pub, we spent a full day going up and back, up and back, up and back... the bloke who organised the trip ended up so incredibly sozzled, he was dancing around on the deck, tripped over and missed ending up with a gaff in the brain by about 10mm. We wern't allowed back on that boat...
Nice fish!

Lucky it wasn't yesterday. Was up there (Anna Bay) and the seas were wild with waves around 10ft-12ft. Stockton was unfishable, as you would have gotten flayed by sand.

Y'know, Keith, despite your fly-swatting, I'm beginning to wonder if you're a GENTLEMAN? There's more to it than owning a Sage, doncha know?

I'm sorry Doug, I didn't think I made any implication that I was a "gentleman", but if I have made any false representations consider them retracted.
Doug has a very unconventional interpretation of the word "gentleman" keith.
He is the only person I know who can offend everyone around him with consummate ease, in just a few short words, and get away with it. laugh1

Ah, fame at last!
O.K. Poly, the story was a little brief. Here's the truth, the whole truth etc. etc.
My mate Ivan has a 25' Bertram, but like me, he doesn't have the sort of rods and reels required for Marlin fishing. The plan was for Kiwi to come along, as he owns more big gold reels than you can poke a stick at. Kiwi also used to run a charter fishing business in N.Z. so he knows his stuff and was to provide the hardware and the expertise for the trip.
Unfortunately Kiwi had to pull out at the last minute, but like the gentleman (note the interpretation Doug) he is, he insisted we borrow his gear. 3 x tiagra 50W's, a Tiagra 80, a Dual 80, flying gaffs, a bucket of skirted lures and tons of other stuff.
So off we headed to a spot near Port Stephens known as the carpark, just inside the shelf. Ivan, his cousin Steve, my son and me, all complete mugs but keen to have a crack at our first Marlin.
We reached our mark, and it quickly became apparent how "the carpark" earned it's name. There were 30 to 40 boats all in a small area, out in the middle of nowhere. The lures went out and it didn't take long before we had a fish on. 45 minutes later Ivan had his first Marlin boatside, where we estimated it to be somewhere between 150 to 200 Kgs.
The fish was far too big to keep for meat, and we wouldn't have been able to get it into the boat anyway, so the decision to release it was a no-brainer. The fish was totally knackered, and quite docile, but eventually came good after swimming beside the boat for a few minutes.
That was the only fish we caught for the day, but nobody cared. The weather was perfect, hot and a glassy sea with no swell. What was really amazing was the number of boats we saw hooked up and backing down on fish.
Any direction we looked in, we could see another boat backing down on a fish, all day. There were Marlin greyhounding across the surface all over the place, some hooked, some just free jumping. I had no idea what goes on out there this time of year and I still can't believe it. Ivan's 25 foot boat was probably amongst the smallest boats out there, most were huge.
My son managed to get some footage on his Xmas camcorder, and didn't do a bad job.

You'll never be bigtime yourself, Chin, but you know a few who are already there, eh?
PS, the interpretation of "gentleman" is open only to gentleman.
Well done Chin , looks like you had a great day. The flat sea and weather looks good
up that way......lucky bugger.
Great looking boats too.
Tim...

So you don't think the little green poly will fit in with the 40 foot Rivierra gang?
Probably right Doug, I can barely afford my to pay my share of the fuel on the Berty. doh
"Probably right Doug, I can barely afford my to pay my share of the fuel on the Berty."
The only time I was out on one of those things, Chin, I paid more for a quarter share of one day's fuel than I did on my house mortgage per month! I always swore the next time I went I'd go with someone who had diesels.
