I wonder how an amateur would have been treated if they had been caught doing the same thing.
Unfortunately the license is still operating, but has been bought by someone else.
There have been attempts by amateurs to lobby fisheries/gov't to make a buyout of the license, but nothing has come of it. One can only imagine the benefits to local anglers, charter operators and holiday makers to Broome if they had the opportunity to catch fish which are sold in other markets.
The NT has made great efforts to establish a fishery which attracts tourism to the top end and adds $$ to the local economy.
Didn't know Threadfin were a commercial species?
Are they good eating?

You look at the sort of fines these blokes get, its an absolute joke! It's no wonder this sort of thing goes on, the games not straight! There was one bloke caught up here somewhere, no licence, illegal nets, literally tonnes of fillets and cray meat, he got fined $4500 and had the lot confiscated. He has probebly been poaching for years, four and a half grand every now and then doesnt seem much of a deterence. Yet there is a bombie aroung the corner from me, we didn't know it was part of the green zone and it seems to be open to interpretation if it is or not, but some poor recreational bugger got pulled up for fishing there in his tinny for a feed, couple of trout onboard; charged $1200! Its rigged I say!!
Threadfin is a lovely eating fish, firm sweet flesh. Very delicately flavoured. I'd rate it better then barra.
And 80 mile beach is an awsome spot, beautifull stretch of coastline. I caught a thready there once, about 12cm long, after a long and arduous battle.

Its always the way the commercial blokes stuff up again, you would think they would have more respect.
Finally some one is taking them to task. . . . .
This is why net fishing is bad. I dont have any problems with commercial fishing, but nets just suck in to much unwanted by-catch.

Yeah chin threadfin is most def a commercial seller. My missus was having a look at the new seafood shop just before christmas and it was $32.00/kilo.
And that's caught locally.
I wonder what it's worth by the time it's refrigerated and trucked to Perth and beyond. shock

no shortage of sharks up at 80 mile, threadies either!!! but still wrong and a shame to see so much fish go to waste. might have to start keeping the odd threadie if people think they are that good.
