It's not to do with weight; it's the fact that it's tiller steer. They (rightly) think that's too big for hand held steering. I had a tinny (spit) once with a forty tiller steer and it got to be hard work quite quickly.

Polycraft won't be interested in issuing a new plate.

Buy it and convert it to a CC

Both posts are right you wont get it insurance on the boat with a bigger engine, but if you convert it to a wheel steered setup then Polycraft will re rate the hull to 60Hp

Bunch of girls. You can get a Merc with 'Big Tiller' in (I think) a 225. Don't worry Dunney, not everyone on here has a tiller handle that's too small to be useful.......laugh1

Of course, the REALLY BIG GIRLS choose the power steering option, eh Kapitan Kustard?

"Fishermen love the proximity of the shift arm to the throttle end of the tiller — making it easy to operate. The trim switch is located within easy reach, providing the boat operator easy access. The power steering option* allows for complete control and safety with no effort or fatigue to the operator. The friction on the tiller arm pivot and throttle can be adjusted and the tiller arm can be lifted and locked into five positions for fishing convenience and trailering security.

I wouldn't know Brother Doug. Being on the lower end of the socio-economic scale, I drive a lowly Yamaha, and haven't been offered a power-steering option yet. Of course I'm not so poor as to have to swat flies to go fishing....laugh1

Could is be possible that is was originally a Console and it was taken out? If the compliance plate states 60 then that could be the case. There is a console for sale ... could be the one off that boat ... here you go ..

any insurance company will drop you quicker than Mike Tyson if you have an accident/writeoff of the vessel and the hull is only rated to 50hp, not worth that very minor yet very costly risk. Can you update the jets or something in the motor for more power and still be 50hp?

You can in the carby two-strokes, depending on brand etc. Most makers have at least a couple of different HP motors based on the same block etc.

I have spoken to a couple of defferent marine mechanics about this very subject. In my case, I can upgrade the 40HP Yamaha to 50HP. They change stuff in the carbies and remove an exhaust restrictor. Cost about $700 - $800. Too much money for me to worry about doing it, but if you were interested in your motor appearing as it was, it can be done.

This is only for carby 2-strokes that I know of. It might be possible with others ie 4 strokes/DI two-strokes, but I don't know.

If you know the right ppl in the industry they will get it done for you and once it has a plate saying its rated to a 60 insurance comp do still insure it.
