The weather has turned for the good now and the good fishing is on for the next three month. The water has cooled and the westerlies have fucked off which means crabs and squid out and about, the sailfish start to appear and the days are calm mostly.
The boys in the workshop took the opportunity to get out and we had four boats out but two competing in our little fishing comp. We headed west for Eaglehawk island via Dockrell reef for a quick fish, it was dead flat as you can see and bloody hot, my 6 beers didn't last long i can tell you, action on the bottom was dead so we got some breeze in the face and went for a troll.
off we went with a 1m Laser pro and a 3m Scorpian in my fav trout colour the pink fluro and before long we had the first trout, just undersize at 41cm and back she went. we trolled across the front of eaglehawk heading for the reefy country and bang another strike, there was a barracuda or longtom jumping out the back and we thought that was the fish that first time fisher Gary was hooked to but the first timer pulls a 49cm trout to the boat, You Beauty!!!
We kept trolling the same ground and got hits from nice sized Queenfish that got all acrobatic for us, it was then that we swapped the 1m lure for another 3m scorpian in a similar pink pattern, it worked!
All up for the day we got 5 coral trout, 2 keepers and 3 going back, 4 big queenies, 3 small mackeral and a golden trevally. We tried looking for some fish on the bottom but no good. Needless to say we won the comp due to the two trout opposed to the 3 mangrove jack of our opponents.
awesome day out in the 23 foot Leeder, great hull and one i may get back into down the track when i need a bigger boat in the years to come. Heading out this weekend for a GT popping session and thena Barra trip the follwoing weeeknd so stay tuned.
