With the winds being at gale force strenght this weekend, the Pirate and the Orphan took the river in the yaks. The Orphan is too shy to post what must have been a unique experience, patting a platypus in the wild. She and the Pirate were watching it swim under her yak when she put her hand in the water to indicate where it was when it popped up under her hand. It took one look at her and headed back in the water.
The experience was so enjoyable that the pair headed back again this afternoon, to see not two as they did yesterday, but five of these monotremes. At the moment, you can't wipe the smile off her face. :):):)
that is just to good, and I hope you get some photos next time you go to that spot
ohh and if you have the time drop in and see what kkw and his lady have been up to

You can get some cream from the chemist for that embarressing monotremes
Might need more than cream if they get you with the spur, Miss Jane.
Still, an enlightening day for the Orphan. I've done something similar in rubber rafts on the Murrumbidgee when my lad was about the same age as your daughter.
What an experience to see one of Australia's unique animals.
Rubber rafts Doug,I thought it would have been more like, timber frame with animal hide outer skinlaugh1laugh1
"timber frame with animal hide outer skin"
Giffo, I'm 60, not sixth century. You'll be old some day too, and I shall get my grandchildren to mock you on this very website.

What an experience to see one of Australia's unique animals.
We usually see at least couple every trip down the local river so we are quite lucky but to have one swim up under the kayak as she pointed in the water to say thats where it is it came up under here hand.
I dont know who was more shocked
It took her a few good seconds after it ducked back under water to realise how special it was to actually touch one!!!!!!!
Doug is quite right about the spur. . . . . & they arent the thing to pick up but as she only touched its back as it swam up she wasnt near the spur.

Anyway you asked for pics . . . . . . . you have no idea how hard that is. . . . . . . they are about 2/3 to 3/4 underwater when swimming on the surface.
Here is the best one got & thats even cropped

What you usually see.
At least you have the photos Pete, and that's more than most people can say, I have seen 4 or 5 over the years and have never had a camera to hand at the time, so thanks for letting us enjoy them as well

Excellent photography Pete. :)
I can't say I've ever seen one in the wild.
Apparently it's only the males that have the nasty spur FYI, but good luck getting closer enough to find out.
You blokes must lead sheltered lives - I've seen dozens when I bushwalked around the Blue Mountains, sometimes whole colonies of them, all cavorting. The dogs and I used to just sit there for hours just watching them play.

Is more like point & shoot Chin. Our camera has a 4 x 5 cm screen. Its almost impossible to see then in the srceen.
Yes thats right only the males have spurs.
Mind you & dont know how to tell from any distance.
Pick em up,turn em over, look for dangly bits before patting them ! Easy Pete !laugh1

How do I paraphrase that for the "Orphan" she is only 15. . . . . . . . .
I suspect it might be more complicated than our resident firie sees it. They are egg-laying monotremes, after all. Try getting that on your pizza.

The water is very cold in Tassie Giffo. laugh1

We went out in our poly kayaks again today & got a couple of pics of a Platypus.
It took about 30 shots to get these 2.

Very nice shots Pete, they are hard to capture on film (or digital).
We have a few from our trips up the Nepean river at Penrith NSW.
Apparently they are an indicator of a clean and resourceful waterway.
What make are you Kayaks Pete?

It was hard work Biggie. I have an Olympus water proof 10 mega pixel camera & even on full zoom the platypus only took up the little square in the view finder.
The kayaks are Perception Flows. Now made by under licence by Mission. as it turns out we have one of each manufacturer.

They are great kayaks for paddling the river but a bit shore & dont track very well in bigger water & thats why Im building the other 2.
