Ok gents another long winded story but hopefully a good yarn.
Webby and myself had been planning for a while after getting permission from a mate to hit up one of his barra spots that he'd like to be kept to a select few, thing was i had fished there previously but thats another story, i'll go as far as to say we left from Point Samson and headed east on another perfect day in W.A
We had scheduled this trip for mid month but silly Webby kinda forgot it was his daughters birthday, he is one mad keen fisher and if you saw him you'd realise this, think of your kids a week before christmas and this is him leading up to the weekend, what rods to bring, which lures should i buy more tackle so on a so forth.
Rescheduled and the boat is packed ready to head out, the big ETEC cruising along at 4300rpm all the way to the mouth, the fun began when i had to use my brain to get in the creek and not the HDS sounder which is being replaced currently due to it letting water get in, so much for an IP rating. We managed to navigate in still on the plane with a few worrying moments but no sand chewed up.
Good news was we where the only ones in the creek so we beached the boat and set up camp in the dunes at the prime spot then laoded back inot the boat and started a troll down the hole in the search for some fish while we awaited the tide to run out. 4 passes and no hits but heaps of action in close on the mullet schools made us change tact and anchor up and hit the fish up with the soft plastics. Instant sucess with the Mangrove Jacks nailing the Berkely Gulps so two went into the esky for dinner. We had anotehr boat come into the creek also looking to camp but we stole the good spot already so they had a troll up and down also with some conversation on each pass with the lads.
The clouds where building early which wasn't good and the two other blokes buggered off possibly home as it wasn't looking good but the gods graced us with no rain as it past to the south and west of us. We went off and got a bucket full of livies and settled on the bank for a barra session. The action was hot straight up with the livies only sitting in the water for seconds before the ratchets made noise, It seemed the Threadfin Salmon had moved in as the baits where being taken and given a good few seconds maybe 45 at the most to eat it and hit the strike but no connection justa stunned mullet with no scales.
Webby had the plan to really concetrate on the SP's for the trip, i was focussed on live bait with some SP's after a few fish but the catfish settled in and Webby gave up on bait and just stuck to the SP's full time with great sucess. 15 mins in and Webby is onto a Barra. He hasn't had much luck this year with the barra getting them landed but he stayed connected to a very nice 80cm barra on a 7 inch nuclear chicken shad. It was decided that we'd keep one each if all went well and we debated for a minute if we should let this one go and keep a smaller one but we came to the decision to keep it.
I kept persisting with the live bait but once Webby had his 3rd barra on the bank i was quickly grabbing my other rod and tying on a 7 inch SP myself. So we kept on casting and watching the weather closely, it went quiet for a while as the tide stopped but once it came back in the fish fired back up again and sure enough webby took down another barra, this time at 90cm which is a new PB for him. I gave in and ripped off my SP and put a new Nuclear Chicken on and began the casting, a few jacks and some catfish ahd my doubting if i was gonna ever do this, firstly i was fishing 6kg mono with a bit of stretch compared to Webby with the 30lb braid so he was getting plenty of action on his SP where i was just absorbing the shock from the action, Barra envy had set in, I was planning to buy braid as soon as i got home as i cracked the shits with the mono when WHAM!!! i got nailed and off went my fish for the other bank.
Line was peeling off and the fish was getting close to the snags but he stayed out, perhaps 6kg line was a little light on for what we where doing but he stayed out and i ran down the bank gaining line back on the Calcutta 400, the G-Loomis rod was giving an impressive arc as the fish neared the bank, i still had the rod tip high and the fish took to the air, WOO HOO BAZZAMUNDY!!! i quickly dropped the rod tip down to discourage the jumping and stay connected and with some quick work we got him on the bank, what a fish!!! it was a big heavy bugger and we sprinted back to the brag mat and to the camera for some happy snaps. 92cm long and what a way to get my first barra, he was released in the hope i'd get another later in the trip.
We cracked a beer to celebrate and headed back to camp as the tide was too strong to work the SP's on the bottom. It was going to be an early night as the tide was changing at 3.45am so the alarm was set for 1.45am and dinner cooked, problem was i left the frying pan at home!! so an improvised grill was constructed with tent pegs and it was burnt rissoles and potato salad for dinner, something so bad never tasted so good after 5 hours of constant casting.
I was a dead still night and i got bugger all sleep so when Webby's alarm went off i was already getting up only to see the boat high and dry, this was going to cause some issues, we tried to push it into the water but no hope, so we had a quick crack from the bank for an hour or so with no luck, we had hoped to catch a barra on a popper at night but it was very quiet, the sandflies where all over us and i cracked the shits and went back to bed, Best Idea EVER!!!
Woke up at a more gentlemanly hour of 5.30am as the sun started it's glow so we fuelled up with iced coffee and V and hit the bank again as we waited for the tide, we kept ourselves entertained with small catfish and flathead for the morning and as the tide broke into the hole it all fired up, I immediately got onto a Mangrove Jack and 5 mins later Webby hooks another Barra but it didn't stay connected for long, this was the 4th he had dropped for the trip but sure enough 30 mins later he hooks another one and stayed connected for number 6 for the trip for him personally, it was perfectly timed as the boat was nearing floating stage and so we called it quits, cracked a beer as it was already 40 degrees at 8.30am, well it felt like it and we packed up the gear and headed back to Point Samson.
So two PB's for length and a personal tally doubled in one trip for Webby, this really is god's country over here. A smooth ride home had the ETEC barking all the way at 5200rpm and we were back on dry land in 15 mins.
Plenty of pics to enjoy fella, drool away
