Just found you guys on the web, plenty of beneficial info and friendly banter. Still procrastinating on whether to go poly or not. Difficult to come to terms with the weight comparison to aluminium, especially when your a fly weight and use ramps with very small inclines.

mate welcome to the site.

reading your post you seem worried about getting the boat on and off the trailer, don't be its easy as, the trailers are set up for just people like you when you launch for the first time spray the skids with wd40 or inox then about every 4 or 5 time you launch if its a 4.5 or bigger just drive on and off

pirate pete hard at it

Gday welcome to the nuthouse!!!!

Poly boats being heavier gives them an advantage when launching.
You just need to submerge the trailer a little further in the water than you are probably used to, thats all!
I have launched just about every size of Polycraft (bar a 5.99) and have found them extremely easy to launch and just as easy to retrieve!

These days most trailers are designed for "drive on, drive off"!
Get used to not pushing and or humping your boat off the trailer, and your boating days will start to be a lot more enjoyable!

Nothing makes me smile more than returning to the ramp after a great day on the water, boats lined up for months struggling with winches and ropes!

Patiently wait my turn, then when my wife backs the trailer down the ramp I simply glide onto the skids, power up, smooth transition to the trailer, leave the motor in gear, throttle at idle then walk to the front of the boat clip the strap to the boat and wind the strap tight!
Hey-presto! Job done!

Would be even easier with one of the new "launch n retrieve" devices on the market.

Did I mention the smooth quiet ride in a Polycraft? I'll keep that for later!

...................... if its a 4.5 or bigger just drive on and off ...............................

I often drive my 4.1 on as well but because the trailers aren't set up as well as the bigger models, it's a tad more difficult (I miss occasionallyshock but hey, it's only a plastic boat:rolleyes:).

Welcome to the site, Gravy.2thumbsup

Thanks for the warm welcome. Placed processes in place to become a poly owner if it goes to plan.

Your comments regarding drive on/off are appreciated, however my problem is one man operation. Very seldom am I not fishing alone, missus is not a fisher person. Greasing the skids may be the answer.

poly is the go mate

have and had others
poly for 1 man is perfect
drive it onto beach/ ramp leave it bogged up on the dry, reverse trailer to it -drag it over the ramp if u feel like it, towards the trailer hook on wich rope keep on winding till it s in place
no other hull will allow u to do this and still be waterproof

alternatively just get a bigger winch -eg 1:10 advantage- i tralier almost 2.5 tonne of boat with a 1:10 winch(and i m not that young anymore- maybe thats why i needed a shoulder reconstruction on second thoughts)

welcome mate- u wont be sorry u went poly 1 st time u are in 1m+ chop u will be glad u dont have a tinnie

"75-80% of my fishing is done alone. "

Don't worry Bazza - we'll still speak to you here. Think of it as a problem with smelly feet or something similar....

It's not a PROBLEM, Doug. When I first got my poly, every man andhis dog wanted to come out with me and I NEVER got an opportunity to fish alone. It wasn't until I stopped washing my feet that I got to go out alone!laugh1

I need something to get rid of the last 20-25% of the hangers-on!2thumbsup

Welcome aboard Gravy

I have only ever winched my 5.3 on twice. Once off a beach ramp where it was that flat I couldnt get any where near like driving the boat on & the other from the back lawn when I dropped the boat off to re rivet the blue teflon back on. I never use spray & when I drive in I dont need to leave the motor running the 5.3 sits on the trailer & I just step over the bow. Hook on & drive away.

For what its worth Gravy, my 455 poly side console was easier to launch and retrieve than my 4 metre v-nose punt (399 proline), Its a lot to do with trailer design but also the design of the boat and the extended rear sections which enable flotation at a point further back that the outboard (hard to explain).
I regularly launched mine at lostock Dam which is ridiculously shallow and had about a 6-7inch drop to the water at the last roller of the trailer and was still easy as to retrieve.

Thats the ramp Im concerned about, my existing 3.85 Explorer Trophy is a real problem, the 4.1 Poly is very close to collection in Qld, Ill have to run up to Lostock to put the acid on its performance.
