Hi guys as I previously stated I am or will be new to the Poly. I have my eye on a 5.99 cc it has a 140 Suzuki on it, What is the general consensus regarding engine size ? The boat is the right price so it is more than tempting to me. I wont be crossing bars that much and my main fishing grounds will be Northern Bay and around the front of Moreton and out from Caloundra, Travelling from Scarb or Bribie. I look forward to reading your opinions.
Regards
Noel

Hi batto65
IMO don't settle for less than max hp recommended on the polys we bought a 5.3 package with a 90hp and had the expense of upgrading to a 115 within 12months (agro)

Yeah thats what every one on here is saying about the smaller poly's and I was kinda hoping that the bigger ones might be alright with the middle of the range in the horse power rating. I have my heart set on a 5.99 cc and one in particular and you know I haven't seen a 5.99 for sale with a 175 on it yet.

Thanks Giffo that would be great if you could do that. Is it a private sale ? The one I will be looking at is in NSW and it is a private sale and I hope to be going down there next w/end all things going to plan.

I have a5.3 with the max on 115Johno on the back....I have to admit that some times the 60kms top speed and the holeshot speed is somewhat dissapointing....go with the max 175hp...and go with the etec as it has the best ooommmppphhhh!!!!! anything short of this will only make you feel inadequate!!!!!!!!!

Cheers Adam.

BGM04 just sold his 5.99 C/C (which coincidentally was also green) which had a Tohatsu 140 on it. Speaking to him several times in the chat room, he seemed to think the 140 was pretty good.
Send him a PM, he may not get on the forum much now that the boat is gone.

Hi Noel
I have a 599 cc with a 130 honda, it does 30knots WOT and 20knots at 4200 revs.Generally this is more than fast enough I have had it about 5 years and can say due to the NQ conditions offshore Ive only had it WOT maybe half a dozen times, at 4200 revs it lopes along in all but the worst conditions. I think if the area you fish is glassed out and you need to do 40 or so knots with a 175 go for it but I will go against the general view and say you dont really need it.I generally average a bit better than 1 nm per litre at 20 knots and find this important as I travel a fair way.A 175 at 20 knots eg lower revs will maybe be better on fuel use but when the hammer goes down so does the fuel load.

Thanks for the input Dreamin, I would prefer the higher end of the HP rating but unfortunately cant find a 5.99 cc 2nd hand with a 175 on it. And like every one there is a budget to try and stick to. I have even thought of buying the one with the 140 on it but have not looked into the cost of a 175 upgrade or trade in value of the 140.

I have a 5.99 Frontier with a 140 4s Suzuki. The best speed I have had is 32kts at 6,100 rpm. I have played with the prop and have the engine up as high as possible. I average just over 1nm per litre fully loaded. I do some very long 100 to 120NM round trips out to the reef and I must admit that it would be nice to travel at 30kts but for around the islands the 140 is fine. If you are fishing only 5 to 10 miles offshore you dont really need to travel everywhere at 30kts. I considered upgrading to a 175 but the 140 is so good on the fuel and the dealers only give you pennies for a trade in.

I did do the ring around on the 140 to get an idea on what it may sell for 2nd hand and was told buy several dealers it may be worth $9000 to sell or about $6000 to trade. A`175 Suzi is worth about $21000. So I will have to see what the 140 is like I guess.

Hi guys, I have a 5.99 with a 130 honda 4st. While it is not a rocket ship it gets along just fine. I have had it loaded to the gunnels with camping gear, extra fuel, fridge, esky food and beer and 3 blokes and it still pushed us along just fine. Now I'm not saying I wouldn't love to have a 175 susie on the arse endpiratesign but as my old man used to say "is want or is it need" and the truth is the 130 does the job and is what I bought the boat with second hand. So low hours, reliable and quiet for a good price means I don't really need to upgrade, even though I want to.

Thats good news for those who are in the market for a 5.99 Jeno.

I have recently seen a 5.99 with a ETC 175 on it for sale up around the Whitsundays, but i think it had high end hours on the motor

I spoke to this guy via email and he was going to charge GST on it as it was a business boat. Ok if you can claim it back!
