As i said in Giffos Cobia post I said the boss had been out after Southern Bluefin Tuna.

He took his own boat down to where we went a couple of weeks ago on a Charter that our suppliers have taken us for the last 3 years & we have only managed 1 Bluefin each over the 3 trips.

He managed 3 or 4 30Kg fish but this Monster beat the rest by miles.

He is about 6' 4" & could only just lift the fish!!!!

Without wishing to cause unpleasantness - does he realise it's now an endangered species? They will be gone forever in another decade if we keep taking fish like this.

Can't blame the rec fisherman for that though Doug.

hopefully its a once a lifetime and the next on gets released
or it keeps the family in fish for a couple of months- saves loads of commercialy caught ones
once i held a fish like that the rest goes back if not foul hooked etc.

I'm not denigrating the fish, or the effort required to land it, just that I would have put it back. But we've been over this lots of times and we agree to differ.

And yes, I know what the long-liners do. They kill a lot of other species too (not just fish!)

I was listening to a piece on Radio National the other day. It was not about lefties and lesbians, which was unusual and frankly disappointing, but it was a fish expert (?) who said that we will very soon get to the point where the blue-fin will be reduced to numbers that will be unable to recover because of lack of genetic diversity and the sheer problem of finding breeding partners. He quoted cod as an example.

Discuss (nicely, no personal abuse!)

That guy holding the fish bares a remarkable resemblance to you Pete, must be a Tasmanian thing. pointlaugh

I did my share of damage to the plight of the SBT years ago. My share of the booty was $30/ton, but things have changed since then. doh

That is some fish!! It would tower over me, I would need a friend to help me hold it up.

I bet it was yummy, I would have to say though ( I never EVER thought I would ever say the words) I agree with Doug, but then I am a bit of a forest dwelling tree hugger.

The thing is, If the government recons its OK for the Pros to come in and decimate them as they do, why shouldent we take the odd one home for a chew?? A rec fisherman taking a fish or two out of the gene pool isnt going to expediated extinction when the pros are cleaning them up by the ton.

Extinct is extinct, no one in power seems in a hurry to ban fishing for the buggers, they had some global bluefin summit somewhere recently where the conclusion went something like "yeah stocks arent good, catches arent good, prospects for the species as a whole arent good.... we'd better keep an eye on it." so us recys may as well get in while we can.

On another subject, it always makes me laugh how they supply those little paddles with big ally trailer boats. I recon if the motor bunged up out to sea in a cuddycab alfoil vessel, you would have more chance of getting to shore by flapping the paddles and flying than you would of paddling home if the wind wasnt in your favour. just a thought.

That conference you mention, Keith, was sabotaged by our slit-eyed Nipponese friends who only eat sushi and whales. They stacked the numbers, just like they do in the whaling conferences, by bribing with money and goodies, piss-fart little countries to vote for their point of view. I mean, why does Outer Mongolia and Zanzibar have any interest in tuna fishing? Suddenly they vote for continuing to fish until the species is exterminated. At the same time as the president gets a new Toyota?

I probably sound like a radical left wing greenie but I'm not - I'm just someone who sees politics ruling the world instead of policy. Mr Rudd has made it into an art form.

And by the way, "I never EVER thought I would ever say the words- I agree with Doug" says Keith. Good boy - stick with me and all will be revealed, Grasshopper.:p

What would you know, Giffo? You wouldn't know if yer arse was on fire (despite exhaustive training at gummint expense, and a frightening avatar,). When it's my fault, I'll put my hand up.

Now, get fell in, in three ranks....... This is the Wing Commander talking now.

Yes Doug it is a vexing problem.

As a recreational fisher I dont think the small amount of fish I actually take is not going to affect the stocks of fish to any extent. The Japanese Tuna fleet take in one day triple what the recreation fleet in Tassie would take in a year.

I personally have only managed 1 fish in 3 years, not because they werent there but my one lure didnt happen to brush past the nose of any more.

My boss the breaded bloke in the picture has spent in the same 3 years twice or more time than me trying for Tuna & has managed to get between himself & the 2 others he goes with 4 30Kg tuna plus the 1 100+Kg tuna, so they too have taken on the average less than 1 fish a year. If thats not sustainable fishing I dont know what is.

Wow thats a big big tuna, what are they like to eat, ours up here are usually reef bait, as they are average to eat. I keep an odd Long tail, and the Yellow fin are not too bad either. All great to catch though. I guess we are all entitled to take what ever we like as long as its within the law.
I don't think that the amateurs are going to make too much of an impact on them.
What sort of gear do you use to catch tuna that big, I don't know if my back would be up to it!
Well done anyway, always interested to see good fish.

They are yummy to eat, it is what they make shasimi out of. We tend to marinate for a few minutes in some citrus and then quickly pan fry. Tuna must be pink in the middle or else it is over cooked.
