It was flat calm this morning so we hooked the 5.3 up & headed out to Port Sorell were we do most of our fishing.
The grass had this funny white stuff all over it & the temp readout in the car had this great big fat "0" on it for most of our trip out. By the time we got to the boat ramp it was reading a balmy "5".
I backed the boat down into the water ready to launch but the battery was flat. . . . . . . not enough to stop the motor from turning over but enough so it wouldnt get spark to fire. Back up the ramp & give good old Dad a call. He dropped down his jump start pack & first turn of the key we were away.
We did a quick rip out to the mouth of the river & back to charge up the battery ( I saw 33.9Kt on the GPs against the run of the tide)
We then did a big troll around the bay & out to the mouth of the river again when we got onto a school of nice Aust Salmon. We spent the next hour or so winding in about a dozen nice sized ones. They are top fun on 4Lb line stripping line off when they get close to the boat. We had several double hook up & one triple.
About 1/2 an hour after the tide turned they seemed to slow down so we headed in to clean them & I got a nice sized pike. He went back as we had more than enough for our selves.
We dropped a few fish off to Dad on our way past to give him the jump start battery back & also gave some to my 91 year old Nan.
All in all it was a top day

I did charge the battery to the camera before we went but se how didn't seem to get to take any. . .
I never thought to look at the sounder to see if the school showed up. . . . .

I think I didn't turn the battery isolator off & the radio memory took the edge off the charge.

Good old Salmon, there's hordes of them here too Pete. They always provide us with some fun through winter.
P.S. did I miss something? You finally bought a GPS/sounder?

Yes Chin you missed it. We got HDS 5X sounder last November but each time we have been on school of fish like today I'm having too much fun catching fish to think to look at the sounder to see what it shows.

Honestly Pete,
what a world we live in when tech-savey spark-masters in sub-zero conditions have super technologically advanced, top of the line echo sounders, but they are catching so many fish they never even look at them, then post a thread with their i-phone using tapa-talk.
Its too much for a poor, boatless, forest-dwelling bush hippy to keep up with.doh
But keep em coming, I need to fish vicariously through you blokes for the moment..... but then look out!

I will now add the bragging details - Yes I out fished them both with 6 in the boat and one escape. When we had the triple, there weren't enough nets to bring all three on board.
It did appear that the essential elements for catching fish was either women or children on board, and we had both!!!!!!!!!!!!

Miss Jane,
A woman will outfish a bloke nine times out of ten... its all to do with the vibes sent down the fishing line....
When a bloke is fishing he is thinking " I'm gonna get you Im gonna get you, Im gonna eat you Im gonna eat you" where as a woman is thinking "here little fishy fishy fishy"
Thats my excuse anyway..
"A woman will outfish a bloke nine times out of ten"
That's because the bloke spends nine tenths of his time driving/moving the boat, rigging the rods, baiting (if it's that sort of fishing!) the girls' hooks, landing the ladies' catch, and then cleaning the catch.
I rests me case.
Sounds like a nice haul Pete,The pike you caught,do you eat them in Tassie ? We have been catching heaps of late as they are great Mackeral bait. How is your HDS5X compared to the cheaper ones, are they worth it ?

We have been again today. Stopped at 12 and just kept throwing them back. We made four deliveries to family and friends on the way home, even traded some for avyummy batch of cream puffs from Pete's Nan.
We had to share the water with a pod of dolphins and then we got feed the Pelicans on the island on the way back in. A terrible way to spend the last day of the holidays! Pictures are on the camera but we have blown our down load limit this month so you will have to wait - even took one of the sounder for you Chin

I don't know much about the sounder but I have baked the pike and it was ok

Where we have been fishing the last two days its probably not worth the extra as you dont need a sounder when the fish are boiling on the top or you can see them in the water streaking past.
BUT & its a big but. When we are working in other places I can see weed on the bottom & tell it apart from rock & sand. We dont tend to get big enough fish to get good "classic arches" but the fish do show up & like Miss Jane said when we get our download limit back (3 more days) I will put up some pics that Miss Jane took today.

then post a thread with their i-phone using tapa-talk.
It is easier to do on the iPhone at the moment as our net connection is shut down to 64kb & it takes ages to load all the pics etc on the full site
Lol lol lol

I guess you've been downloading porn again Pete?
No Photos? just another b***S**t fishing story I think.... hahhahaha
and about the temp... I just spent the weekend at the football on the outer islands and was sweating my butt off... glad to get back to the house at night to get into the AC...
anyone who is a Rugby League fan may remember the face in the photo...
Sam Backo, he was out at the island for the 25th Anniversary of the Island of Origin games.
(I didnt know who he was until I googled him...doh)
like Miss Jane said when we get our download limit back (3 more days) I will put up some pics that Miss Jane took today.
For most plans with most ISP's, UPLOADING pictures has no effect on your DOWNLOAD limit or connection speed. Upload is normally measured separately and typically handicapped lower than your download at the best of times anyway.
Pete have you ever fished the Tamar river or out from Burny Island down south , by the way that's a great report.
Damm Tassie is looking good to retire in

I have never fished the Tamar or down Bruny, They are starting to get Snapper in the right spots in the Tamar so it would be worth the hour trip to get the boat in the water there.
I have been to Bruny only the once & loved the place, I would love to have a house down there but some how work seems to get in the way but that wont worry you.
If you are thinking that way maybe look at St Helens on the East Coast. We have posted a few times from down there as we try to get there a couple of times year. Its usually warmer, has a big enclosed bay that will suit your 4.1 & there is the opportunity to get out to sea as well.
Let me know if you want more info.

Hey Pirate,
I was just thinking, if you are going out to find those swarms of salmon again, you should pack you swoffer. You wont have to cast far and they should eat anything that remotely resembles what theyre feeding on. Could be a fun way break the ice...
But you may want Miss Jane and the Orphan hiding in the cab while you get the swing of things so to speak.
I once was in a SW fly fishing contest in the Bay of Islands in NZ, and the bulk of the fish caught were Aust Salmon. Good fun on light fly tackle. Some days they're fussy what fly to take, other days they'd eat a bare hook.
I must make more of an effort to chase a few on fly,doh particularly while most of my favourite trout waters are closed.

Some blokes have had good luck with this type of thing "eye candy". I have read that sometimes when they boil up as Pete described, but you cant see what they are hitting, it is often fish fry or "eyes" as they call them

You might have some thing there but yes the Cuddy Cab might be the place for the others or heaven forbid I might have to just go by myself. yippy yippy yippy

Big Sammy Backo was a legend, used to hit like a freight train and run like a road train on heat!shock
let u in on a cheap tip
smiling jack makes a blue bibbed lure
sell for about $10
salmon cant leave em alone
as for fly
here is the cheat
tie on a naked hook - use a small bit of squid tentacle- light enough to still fly cast
i know its cheating - but i m all for hooking em up anyway i can, and cant be bothehered to tie my own anymore- hold on they take off like freight trains ( only have a number 5 rod nothing funny to see 100 m plus another 100 backing stripped)

OH MY GOD!! doh (Higgins from Magnum PI)
DvrDve have you NOT learnt anything on this forum?
For goodness sake dont mention FLY and BAIT in the same sentence, let alone ADMITTING you put BAIT on a FLY rod!!
Doug is going to go to defcon 5 over this one! If I were you, I would pack up, sell everything and leave the country on an unmarked drug runners plane... like yesterday... everyone else, cover your eyes
Its like dangling a bloodied baby in front of a Pig Dog... its just not going to end well
The "Noosa Bypass"(Doug) will not be happy you have dragged the gentleman's fishing art down to this !:eek:
never said i was a gentleman
be surprised what a stick of bang can do to trout :)
i would rather catch fish than throw a hundred unsuccesful patterns
i am all past the nature experience to tie and cast and slowly meander downriver
- and yes i will use a speargun on trout as well :)

You have just stepped it up a couple of more notches..........
Poor old Doug will be still picking himself up off the ceiling.
The only Trout I would like to spear with my speargun, would be coral trout, as the water temp would be nicer !
