View Full Version : Dealbreaker!
Hi all,
I've done the maths and it shall be a tight squeeze, but,
and its a big but,
A 1800kg braked towing capacity vehicle (2000 Hilux 4x2 DualCab) going to be enough to befriend a 5.99 Cuddy?
The biggest trip it shall do is the initial pickup in Gladstone (to Townsville with empty fuel tank), and then from then on it shall be just a quick 3-4 km trip over the hill to the local ramp/or worse case scenario a 200m to my very local (flat) ramp!
I'm of the opinion it'll be all good (just).
Edit: Hopefully - have a 175hp Suzy on the back - 220 Kg's
Please let this be all good - otherwise it just might be a deal breaker - cannot afford another car as well!

I don't think there's an easy way to tell you this, Wadapee, but I suspect you'd be over the 1800Kg limit with that rig, even dry, never mind fueled and watered, but I'll leave it to the blokes who can do maths to tell yo for sure.
Weight is the one down side of poly boats.
I have the later model 4x4 diesel hilux, when I bought the 4b the dealer gave me the choice of the lighter cheap tow bar, sorry cant remember its towing capacity, the one i bought is good for 2250kg, so I would have a look for a stronger bar

Alright, I guess I'll have to add it up.
I don't mind keeping it to a minimum - i do live very handy to the ramp, 286m as the bird flies!
I know it's a drama but I can ferry most of the other stuff, especially if it means I get the boat I want. Realistically - the big trips to the reef will have all the weight, not going to happen every day.
Boat 1040kg
Donk 220kg
Fuel 200kg
I assume you include the trailer weight as well???
Two batteries - 40kg?
1500kg + Trailer, so far.....
Will talk to the local mechanic tomorrow?
Please don't tell me I'm dreamin'
Starting to get a knot in my stomach.....

Hi Wadepee & welcome to the forum.
I have a 5.3 Cuddy Cab & it goes 1540Kgs all up with about 1/2 a tank of fuel on a local weigh bridge (mine is the one on the boat of the month link on the right of the main page). The trailer is rated to 1600Kgs.
Maybe one of the 5.99 owners can tell you what their rigs weigh all up.
now getting a really large knot in the stomach......

Wade its simple
get the boat sent up on the back of a truck
then just use your car for the short trip to the ramp... just take it easy!
One day down the track you can up grade the car!

Miss Jane made me buy a new house to keep the boat in a shed & then made me get a new car to tow it with after we got our 5.3
I was only looking at a 4.1 but Miss Jane said I had to have a 5.3
I'm with Dave - the Qld Police aren't that smart. I just wouldn't tow it to Broome.

The 5.99 trailer weighs 450kg. The dry towing weight of my centre console is 1950kg so technically I am up around the 2.2 tonnes with a full load of fuel, ice and gear. I would get the poly transported to your house because if something goes wrong on the trip your insurance company will wipe you like a dirty bum and the authorities will crucify you.
Wade,
I did some research on the 5.99 a while ago and spoke to some owners, all told me the fully loaded weight is 2t+ so dry weight will be close to 2t. Could you borrow a big 4by to tow it? Or maybe hire one. Boat transport is stupidly expensive so you could save a fair bit that way.
If you don't mind me asking, where are you looking to get the boat? I've been asking/searching around here but prices seem to be a lot higher than brissy & surrounds.

I tow my 5.99 with a 2000 model 4X4 Hilux. I put it on the back of one of the work 4X2 Hilux, and believe me, it didn,t like it. They are very front heavy, and I had to jack up the back of the ute to get the jockey wheel down.
doh
LearJohn - That's what I have (2000 4x2 Hilux)
The new ones have 2250 tow cap, I assumed the old ones did as well, mine only has 1800kg.
Looks like I'm going to have to go back and re-access the whole plan.
Thanks for all the info guys - shall continue to troll the forums for advice and try and sort out
a vehicle, without having to re-visit the suits!
