That is one flash looking piece of hardware Keith, gearing up for the new boat?

Sort of chin, also preparing for my trip up north.

When I made my first purchaces of swatting equipment, I was informed by the more accomplished gentleman anglers that for salt water angling a more refined reel is required. Six months on and my little $70 jobby has had the drag smoked and the handle is begining to seize up. So I thought I'd better invest now befoer I'm going toe to toe with some form of gnarley cape york bastard-fish. I kept my eye out for this brand as Doug had good things to say about it..... And you know how cynical Doug is.

Cynical? Me?

Felty's reels are good provided you don't immerse them. Under normal SW fly swatting that shouldn't happen, but if it does, strip it down and lubricate generously. I've fished with Felty - he's only got one leg, so I felt superior until the catch was counted.......shock. The drag is excellent. (probably over-engineered for you, Keith...)

All Sage rods are good, altho some are better than others. Keep careful control of receipts etc as they have gotten increasingly "difficult" recently with warranties.

I appreciate that you're much more likely to break it in the car door than on a fish, but fortunately Sage doesn't ask.

Let me know if you catch anything edible.

Backing - braid is the only way to go. The pink stuff is good/reasonably priced. Make sure you put it on the reel under tension (VERY Important!). If in doubt, send whisky and call me (0417 040306)

It'll cost you of course - I'm not cheap!

What sort of Sage rod did they conn you with? He-he, bet it's a trout rod for the Snowy Mountains.....pointlaugh

You certaily do rub sholders with the whos who of... well... most things, doncha Doug. I dont recon that many things with moving parts do like being submersed in the ol' briney, and perhaps under normal circumstances it wouldn't happen. With me theres a good chance its gonna happen ALOT. I'll grease it up and do my best to maintain it as I go, but I figure that an abused $$$$ reel is going to last longer and perform better than an abused <$ reel.

And dont you worry, there are going to be so many pics that Daves going to have to juice up the site to allow space for them all....

Well... thats the way I think now full of frozen pizza, jim beam and luke warm white wine:rolleyes:

It has two reels full of "bionic braid" whatever that is...

I got a Xi2 9 weight, I have never really tested its ability to handle a real fish, I'v gotten a few 50-60cm barra on it, does ok, but the test is going to be when I get an eat from some type of bruiser.. you know, Trevally, macky, queeny or somtin.

And I am a poor hospitality worker up to his eyebrows in debt Doug... I cant afford single malt

Sigh, you fools that spend all that money on fluff. Betcha I can outfish you on my $50 supermarket special.

Keithy P
18-06-2010, 22:25
No doubt Andy, but once you have caught a few thousand fish on supermarket specials you want a bit of a challenge, and it gives you something to do at home when the weathers bad (well... something else).

Keithy P
18-06-2010, 22:38
Actually, where do you live Andy... ahhhh, Brisbane.
I betcha if I had your supermarket special I would out fish you up here where I fish, compared to you down there where you fish...

Now thats not very sporting is it?

DvrDve, My good man, at this time of night on an evening such as this, Im lucky to be able to stand, let alone go fishing, so typing is a luxury (though ill admit I did have to copy+paste your handle).

So whats your excuse?

Please feel free to post pics of your catch of the day for us all to peruse2thumbsup

Keith, m'dear chap, if you're aspiring to be a Gentleman Angler you start drinking single malt even if you can't afford it - that's what gentlemen do.

9wt is the perfect size for up there. There ain't nuffink you can't land on a 9wt, altho sometimes it'll take a minute or two (64 minutes for a bludger trevally is my PB. If I'd known it was a bludger I'd have broken him off. I thought it was a grand piano).

Now, as an alternative to drinking single malt, some gentlemen tie their own sw flies. That's good fun, as they're big enough to actually see, unlike the freshwater mosquitoes.

Now, practice saying after me, "All bait fishermen are Philistines".

i do have a quetion for you fluff chucker. I may have been known to use a fluff chucker on occasions, but only for a specific spieces of which I have to tie my own fluff. The problem I have is that the epoxy I use turns yellow all the time. How does one stop the yellow.

Its all about the product Andy, I'm told. Those in the know are reccomending "Liquid fusion" as an epoxy that doesnt yellow.
I couldn't find it so I have ordered a couple of different products that I'm going to try out.

Hey Keefy, very nice looking reels mate!
I only have a couple of cheap fly outfits but miss the flicking the fur badly!
I used to walk the creeks and rivers up in the mountains back home, and loved it! There is just something special about a little wild brook trout sighted and stalked in a knee deep running river! Fabutastic!
Haven't tried it down here yet?

Good luck with it all!
