Hi everyone, i have had the 4.55 for nearly a month now so i thought its about time i start my build up thread.

She is a 2005 4.55 side console (in survey) with a 60 yammy 4 stroke. So far im very happy with how it performs after my old tin can, it is a little hard to get used to the lack of speed but ill get there.

Mods so far
Horizontal rod holders
Tacho
New bilge and piping
Nav lights and general electrical tidy up

Mods to come
Casting deck extention
Rear seat infill
Deck lighting
Bow mount lecky
Short bow rails
Upgrade electronics

Be ready for the onslaught of pics :)

Bring em on Mygyver. How do you find the rod storage ... can you actually fit 5 rods in there as I was a little sceptical when looking in the shop. looks good without the rails too.

Thanks
Matt

i have had 5 rods in them it does work, the reels sit more straight out instead of down its not ideal. They do work well with 3 rods tho all my rods are right hand wind so they sit nice

I like the bare front with no rails too but i dont want to mount my rod holders to the plastic so im putting short (450mm) rails in, rod holders are the cannon adjustable type with rail mount bracket.

A quick question does anyone have experience with bow mounted minn kota electrics on a 4.55 or similar, im trying to decide which way to go either 55 or 70lbs thrust. 55 is cheaper and is 12volt but i dont want to find it has not got enough poke.

Any advice would be much appreciated

If you are poking around the estuaries then the 55lb will be fine. I'm still tossing up between the Minn Kota ST 55lb with built in iPilot and the 80lb 24v system. The difference is about $800 inc batteries etc. If you want to use the bow mount offshore spot locking reefs or for use in heavy tidal flow then you will need the 80lb for sure. I kinda like one of my front bins for my drinks too!!!!

Cheers for the replies, by the sounds of it a 55 will suit me well. I also have been looking at the ipilot function and not sure if i would get the most out of it, what i think would be really nice is a wireless foot controller. Do the different options represented by letters eg ST, FC etc confuse anyone else? a legend on the Minn Kota website would be nice.

I have the remote wrist control with my Minn Kota; prior to buying it, I watched a few guys using foot controls and a number of them seemed to be holding it! When I queried those guys, their response was along the lines of "foot controls are very hard to operate with any precision if the boat is rocking in a swell" etc.

Very happy with my remote hand control but if I was buying a new one, I would almost certainly go the iPilot option; I like the idea of it being able to hold station within a metre or so of a set location and also the ability to follow a track through snags etc.

Unfortunately, I think my motor is too old to fit one retrospectively and I can't justify buying a new one ATM.

I have the 55lb thrust Minn kota with I-pilot, and it is fantastic. Fully remote control and the spot lock holds against tide and wind within a couple of feet.
Brilliant for casting around snags etc, don't have to frig around with the anchor. yippyyippyyippy

just finished the worlds longest rod holder installation, i bought some cannon adjustable rod holders and turns out they dont come with the backing plate. I searched everywhere and ended up having to buy them from the U.S. 6 weeks later and they finally arrived.

They may cost 3 times more than the normal ones but for the quality and strength they are worth every cent!

I don't know anything about your location or yourself but In Qld you are required to have a white all round VISIBLE white light on whilst moving & at anchor. I have been so close to running up the arse of guys (gold coast seaway) who don't know this and its dangerous. So many people call it an anchor light and think thats all its for, but thats NOT the case. We did alot of education at the fishing tournaments & changed alot of peoples opinions when they had the full understanding of the requirements. These all round white light are cheap as chips so it surprises me to see people trying to avoid it? Again, this isnt against you its about the use of these lights for safe boating. It would be interesting to do a poll and find out who knows the actual rules. I only know the Qld law on this issue so I dont make any coments about other states. If anyone needs to actually see the rules it is available here http://www.msq.qld.gov.au/~/media/1498febd-26d8-4221-af60-6d0da76778ef/pdf_rec_guide_2010_2011_part_12.pdf What sort of light does PolyCraft supply with its boats std??

Cheers

MikeEng

I believe the white light is directly from the International Shipping code. They are a requirement here in WA as well.

Mark i understand what your saying and i do know that i am breaking the rules if i was in a more busy waterway like the goldcoast seaway i would definately have it on, but 95% of my night time driving is right up the bribie passage in the creeks and real skinny water, i always use my travelling lights.

if you wonder why i dont just put it on all the time, red and green is alot softer on my eyes and the white light from the anchour light LED's is very brilliant and reflects a fair bit which is not what i want. i rely on my eyes adjusting to the dark because i dont use a gps and i only use lights for finding my crab pots.

Also in my above post when i said my light shines out at about 20 degrees i ment it shines out horizontally 10 degrees plus and minus horizontal and 360 degrees around the boat

My crabbing light,

According to the ColRegs (http://www.boatingsafety.com/colregs.htm), lights MUST be displayed between sunset and sunrise and, IF carried, they must also be displayed at times of restricted visibilty between sunrise and sunset (e.g. fog).

The implication is that if you don't have lights, you do not have to display them between sunrise and sunset.

Rule 20
Application
(a)Rules in this part shall be complied with in all weathers.
(b) The Rules concerning lights shall be complied with from sunset to sunrise, and during such times no other lights shall be exhibited, except such lights which cannot be mistaken for the lights specified in these Rules or do not impair their visibility or distinctive character, or interfere with the keeping of a proper look-out.
(c) The lights prescribed by these rules shall, if carried, also be exhibited from sunrise to sunset in restricted visibility and may be exhibited in all other circumstances when it is deemed necessary.
(d) The Rules concerning shapes shall be complied with by day.
(e) The lights and shapes specified in these Rules shall comply with the provisions of Annex I to these Regulations.

Mark

Don't take my comments wrong or in a negative way, my original comment was I thought it must be hard for you to see with it on. I took some Photos of the light that came with my Triumph, & I only wish the Boat manufacturers would supply good lights as a std. After our discussions I went out and had a better look at mine. You can see in the pic it has a black bottom & top of the light. When it is fitted it sits high in the air and when I stand the light level is still above my eyes. No night vision impairment at all. Light is kept on the back wall of the floor behind the driver. Anyway you will see this style of light on alot of the American imports & Bass boats as well. Always hope the info helps someone for their own safety.

Jason i purchased these in aus at Northside marine in Boondall QLD, price was $2595 for the HDS 7, HDS 7m, network kit AND TRANSDUCER, watch this as alot of the ones ive seen advertised dont come with a transducer. I could have saved around $200 if i bought overseas but for the extra money i like that if i have a problem i can take them back and speak to someone face too face.

Dawn service tomorro with a few rum and milks, then if tuesday is good weather a bit more testing will be done. Yesterday i learnt how to read what prawns look like on the screen, so i cant wait to see whats next!
