We headed out this morning with a good run out to tempest there was whales everywhere one of the buggers passed by our boat and set the whole six of our rods off, it even did the same to the boat next to us. Giffo hooked up to three big fish but they spat the hooks after a good fight which was disappointing. He bought up a small squire after a big fight and it had no scales left on it as something big had tried to swallow it. The same thing happened to me with a 3kg snapper there must be some big fish down there to nearly swallow a good snapper. We had a good trip back and it was good to met up with another poly member. We ended up with fifteen snapper between 2 and 3 kg each rosy job fish, pig fish, and a pearly.
Cheers Steve

Nice work Steve & Giffo, looks calm out there. Glad you got a few fish for your efforts ... especially with the stinky bait option ... ever use any plastics out there?

Thanks
Matt

Speaking of plastics, I have a typical plastics story. Yesterday afternoon went out from GC Seaway not too far (about 17 fathoms) fishing for trag/snapper. Caught plenty of trag using pillies on classic paternoster with 5/0's. Most were small and released, but did manage the 5 legal fish limit. As an "aside" I put in a 10lb spinning rod and tied on a small 1/2 ounce jig head. For variety I cast it out with a 5" berkley gulp (Jerk Shad in Nuclear Chicken colour for those who care), let out a bunch of free line and stuck it in the rod holder to let the ocean/boat jig it for me while bait fishing. Every now and then I'd flick the bail arm over and let out a couple meters more line. It caught a wider variety and better quality of fish than our bait fishing did, including 3 snapper (we got none on bait), a maori cod and several trag. If you haven't tried it before, give it a go. Simple, cheap and good results.

I think there's an error in the title of this thread - don't you mean, "Off-side with Giffo."? He is a firie, you know.....

Hi Steve b
Some nice snapper you have there and nice calm conditions.

Went out fishing the same area with Incredible Charters last month, only us and Real Easy charters out there. Not exactly calm conditions.
In total we had about 50 keepers, mostly pearl perch, but not a single snapper.

Is your spot a secret snapper ground?
