Here is a few pics of a camping trip to Lake Aragan on the NSW mid north coast in 2007.The first pics is on day one,the following two are at 9am a few days later, the annex was actually ripped off and blown half way across the paddock.Needless to say we went home that day, as the water came into the camper floor and all the kids beds got wet!

Sunset at Moreton looking across the bay and the tangalooma wrecks.

Also a shark feeding frenzy in Hervey Bay, there was about a dozen sharks, with tuna swimming around the outside. This was with a charter fishing trip, we came accross them moving from one fishing ground to another.

Paul, get out your manual and learn how to use exposure compensation. I think you said you had a nikon? I use canon, but I think that dial on the back of the nikon does exposure compensation? Looking at those photos you just need to dial up an extra stop or 2.

Here's something a tad different, our old "Six-Wheeler" my old boss owned the six wheeler company in Dalby Qld.
This was Gary's personal ute, sold to us and we then customized it a tad.
Added the storage box, tray cover, driving lights and then the lpg conversion! The lpg was computerized with gas injectors, made a huge difference.
Pulled like a freight train, drove like a sports car!

Gee I miss this vehicle!

Well mate since you offered, I'm interested to know about taking pics in RAW (no not naked), what's the deal and how does that work?
Do you convert the pics back to normal on a program afterwards? What's the advantage?

I really should go to a course on this, but I don't take a lot of pics, would be nice to go one better than "auto" mode though.

Thanks BigFella,

Living in Cnb for a while, moving back to Cairns soon though!

Poly - always RAW for serious shots mate, you should have gotten an editing program with the camera, I know that Canon gives you one. RAW is able to be modified a lot more on basic editing (colours, sharpness etc).

There's heaps of forums, so I'd recommend finding a Nikon forum that you like and starting there. I wouldn't bother about a course, it's all on the web now-a-days, it's just a matter of looking and reading, particular if you then go and try what you've just learned.

Cheers mate, stick with it. It's a great hobby.

Interesting about the raw comment. I used to always shoot in raw mode. Now not so much. I often hear people saying about shooting with the lowest iso possible too. Then I did spend some time with a pro, who shoots for nat geo among others. He shoots jpg, at any iso to get the shot. I think people spend too much time post processing than learning how to take a good photo. I learnt to take photos using film, digital is great, but post processing wont make a good photo.

If you are using a entry level slr, then raw v jpeg is irrelevant. Learn to take a good photo first.

BTW, I have a photo that I have sold taken with a 3mp point and shoot sony in the early days of digital. That photo has made me a fair amount of cash to date. See attached. That was shot in jpg, post processed to b&w. Can post the original if wanted. Taken when I was bored one weekend exploring new angles of a place I have photographed a million times before.

Actually, there is challenge. Look closey at that photo I took. Its a picture of the old shark proof enclosure at shorncliffe, brisbane. There is a couple of key visual aspects that critics would say makes it a good photo.

Dave
14-07-2010, 07:49
This is what I was told a while ago about digital photos,

"The problem with JPG format is that each time you open and edit a jpg file, there is a loss in the quality, they are referred to as lossy..

Take the photo and then transfer to computer, open and then save as a TIFF file. Then edit that TIFF file and then save as a jpg again."

I have found this works well for me with no loss of quality

BarryJ
14-07-2010, 08:32
Yep, that's my understanding of the situation with jpg files as well, Dave. The losses occur because there is a degree of compression (decreasing file size) which occurs each time you save a pic as a .jpg

Andy
14-07-2010, 10:29
But you should only be saving once :P copying a photo from a memory card to harddrive does not affect quality.

Will
14-07-2010, 15:16
With memory cards as cheap as they are I cannot see a reason not to save in RAW format.

Having said that unless you have professional-grade equipment the quality loss due to compression is negligible compared to artifacts introduced by the camera.

I'm only using RAW but don't do too much post-processing, but it helps to have that little bit of flexibility. Completely agree with the lowest iso possible though.

More pic's. The last one is a picture of a fish I got from flickr.I did a search "ugly fish" and this was easily the winner. It's my avatar and I squashed the photo into a square to fit that format. I recognize that camp site! Great spot, we have spent many weekends camped there for the Cod Classic Opening held the first weekend in December!
We have also camped up the Ovens river some fantastic spots in he wooded area!
