Grabbing crab pot floats from a four metre tinny is easy. Not so easy when the hull sides are a lot higher and it's rough.

So here it is the polyFrank mark 2 crab pot retriever.

An aluminum telescopic paint roller holder, the type used to paint ceilings. It's threaded at the end to screw on a paint roller. Just take the roller off and bend the wire into a hook.
It extends out to a decent length and short enough to stow easily.

So there you go.
Getting the crabs is both easy and fun.

I just use an extendable boat hook, the type you get from your local marine shop

Well I never knew there was such a thing as an extendable boat hook. I could of saved myself a few $$$.

bit of fencing wire wrapped onto a broom handle works, sort of.

Well thats what mark 1 was poly, a broom handle with a coat hanger wire.

The wife and I used to go off Cleveland and fish in the southern bay, set our pots away from the usual crab pot infestations well north of Peel Island.
If any decent southerlies were blowing we would fish the edges of the reefs North of Peel.

This particular day we set our pots as usual and fished at North Peel. The wind picked up and we decided it was time to go.
By the time we got to our pots it was rough. "Your not close enough", "You've just ran over the float", "F this I'm going home". So the deckie spat the dummy and we left 2 pots behind.

So the extra reach makes life a lot easier.

I use the gaff ... on pots or mutinous crew after they've "accidently" fell overboard :D

Ha Ha Ha. Well I don't have a gaff which is just as well as the wife said it would be 6 months not 6 weeks and she would find a use for the gaff on me!
