I've seen one made from an old alvey rod/reel combo, with the rod cut down to one single runner, easy enough to do and save bucket loads. putting cableties every metre with a double cable tie every five metres.

I've also seen someone make their own downrigger bomb from a camp sandwhich iron with wire put in the right places.. that way if worst comes to worst and you lose the bomb, then it will cost you about $5 to replace it.

Here's a more "flasher" version I googled, also uses an alvey reel: http://www.stuff.co.nz/sport/fishing/hall-of-fame/user-fishing-reports/2269747/DIY-Alvey-downrigger

I plan to make my own, I'll post the process etc when I do. Just remember to tie the rod into the rod holder some how, probably with a rope/cord with double brass clips, such as:

Have fun.

This guy is interesting for heaps of stuff. I have used him before for a $2100 purchase & it all went well with no probs at all. He is a Aussie now living in USA. You can call him and talk to him in person for a local call only, & even if what you want is not listed on his site, he can still get it for you. He will cover you with Warranty on items as well as the import Duty. His price includes it all. have a look & make up your own mind.
