View Full Version : Restoring faded poly
I've been looking at a some used Polycrafts over the past couple of months, and I've come across a few coloured ones that have faded. Is there any way to restore the colour? Will the sharkhide stuff BigFella's peddling do the trick?

it would be interesting to see if a normal cut/polish would work, topped off by BigFellas shark stuff.
Get some practice on the wheely bin and see what works.

I was also thinking along the lines of removing the outer layer with a buff of some sort.
Look, don't do anything rash for the moment. When the Brains Trust come on line, after the pubs and bordellos close, they will tell you a trick with a heat gun and some degreaser*. Brings 'em up like new, they claim.
(* No animals were hurt during this procedure......... unless you count the camel and the goat.)

or mix schmacko's with some sort of animal oil... lightly smear on outside of hull then leave your gate open, marauding dogs will lick it clean in hours.. doug may have a skin-friendly recipe too?!? ;)
I will hate myself in the morning for agreeing with Doug, but in the very worst cases it will work, all so if you are welding poly it will stop it from discoloring.
that little trick was first posted by polyboy (Darren Morgan) and he worked for poly craft as there sales and marketing guru.
he has since packed up his toys and gore fishin, however for a small fee will be only to happy to take you along as well

So what is this magic trick with the degreaser? Or will ya have to kill me if ya told me?
Found this on the old forum from Poly Boy (in relation to removing black specks from hulls):
"try washing it down with degreaser and hi pressure clean it"
There are also other comments about using degreaser to clean a small area before heating it with a heat gun to apply stickers etc. but nothing about restoring colour.
Personally, I don't see the point in even trying. It's only gunna happen again and at the end of the day, a bit of fading doesn't affect the overall performance (mine is a bit faded but it still floats which is the main consideration for a boat).laugh1
Listen up you racist bastards, you are always talking about colours. When will you realise that white does not fade?

Cheers Barry,
I've seen the bit about removing spots as well. You're right about the fading - it doesn't affect the hull performance (as far as I know, anyway) but just looks crap. I was just wondering if I do buy a used poly that's not pigmentally challenged (happy Andy?) then I'd want to give it birthday and maybe if I squint it'll look like a new one :)

You were never a fussy bugger, were you, Barry?

Here you blokes, check out this youtube link. Can't see plastic bumpers on cars being any different to Poly boats/bins etc. Could take you a while to do a 5.99 with a heat gun.

Thanks,

this may or may not work, but I will give it a go at the weekend and let you know if it works

I have done trials on faded fiberglass.
Sharkhide restored the shine on RED, BLUE and WHITE fiberglass surfaces.
Now I have done limited trials on faded plastics, red and blue mainly but they have both responded well to a single application of Sharkhide.
I have trialled using Degreaser and heat and was not entirely happy with the results, you see the heat is applied to draw some of the degreaser into the pores of the plastic. Given the right weather conditions what ever goes into the plastic will definitely leach out over time?
My opinion is the surface will fade and blotch in a very short length of time.
Sharkhide brings the lust back into a faded surface and seals this surface for an average of 4 to 5 years depending on usage.
I will offer to supply the first two members from PBO who have genuine faded Poly boats of supplying them with 1x Litre can free of charge, the only condition is they must agree to document the results in here?
So who wants to take me up on the offer?

,,,,,, yes Giffo, but does it shine like my 5.3?????
I doubt it dude! You may be surprised Giffo?
big fella that hull really shines on your 5.3 i wonder if applied to the planing surface if it would reduce the drag poly boats have in the water?

I had thought that very thought but was a tad worried about making skaty?
I might try it and see what happens, at worst it'll be exciting for the punters next hire!!!!!
Actually one of the 4.5's is due for a de-scale and clean next week I should coat his arse and see what effect it has?
bigfella mine aint gonna be faded enough in time to take u up on the offer ( ? sadly or not)
want work to get some to see on fibreglass boat- but thats office side
some of us clever blokes know white is white
bigfella did you end up trying the sharkhide on the planning surface of the 4.5? I would be interested to see if you did it and it helped with the drag
