Hi,

My name is Sac; I live on the Central Coast NSW. I'm a very keen rec fisho. I'm pleased to have joined this excellent forum.

I'm amazed at the camaraderie and wealth of knowledge I've found browsing here!

I currently have a 5 metre Quinnie with an 80h/p 4 stroke Yamaha. But, after much research I am almost absolutely convinced I need a 4.8 brumby CC with a similar motor.

I have a few very small doubts, such as whether it will perform as well as my quinnie offshore, and how easy they are to clean blood and guts out of etc.

I plan on leaving it on the water during summer and hear polyboats are great for low maintenance.

I'm looking to buy the brumby within the next three months, maybe less.

Regards,

Sac

Sac

The extra weight of the Polycraft makes them ride better than most ally boats of the same size & as for blood & guts sticking to a poly. . . . . . you are lucky to keep any stickers stuck to them let alone any thing else

Thanks for the welcome Pirate Pete, as for the blood and guts, I was more thinking about how hard it is to get them out of the hull if I kept my boat on the water, and therefore couldnt open the bung holes. Also, is it possible to make them self draining?

I have a 5.3 & it has a bilge pump in between the skins & also one in the motor well. When Im out fishing & get a lot of blood on board I wash it out with buckets & buckets of water. Then when I take off & get the boat up onto the plane the water runs back to the pumps & gets about 90% of the water etc back out.

Welcome Sac,we are a bit one eyed about plastic boats here, but for good reason. They are good.I am originally from Budgewoi, where abouts on the Central Coast are you ?

Giffo, born and bred in the forresters beach area and therefore have fished the reefs north of terrigal my whole life for kingies, jews, trag, tuna etc. But now live in Point Clare so brisbane water and out from broken bay is my new stomping ground. Not half as fishy but Im still finding some good fish.

I havent seen a bunch of blokes so passionate about a type of boat as you poly owners.

I've had glass boats and was until recently a sworn Quinnie dedicate. But I am really impressed by the simplicity and ease of maintenance of the poly, plus all the other pros, especially since i want a boat to spend all of summer, maybe even spring and autumn sitting on the water. Where I am I cant fit a boat bigger than 5 metres but dont want to compromise on offshore fishability (within reason in relation to weather). The 4.8 brumby seems perfect.

G'day Sac,

Mate welcome to the site. I have recently taken delivery of my brumby, and its a fantastic rig. Going offshore its extremely comfortable, much more so then a larger tinney. I put an 1250gph auto bilge in mine to suck the water out fast, but the floor doesn't rain that quick so I am in the process of installing a drain to get it down quicker. I dont think there would be anyway to safely convert it to self draining. I would recomend, if you are using it exclusivley for offshore work, get the spray chines fitted. I didn't, the weather here has been shocking lately and shes wet going offshore in the wind. I dont mind because its still 30 degrees, and im not afraid of taking a shower, but others dont nessesarily like it. The other thing is if I was priimarily fishing offshore, I would get a big console fitted like what sweeden has (he has his boat in the showcase section).

Don't think that I'm knocking the brumby, because I am definately not. The way I have mine set up is the perfect combination of snag basher/bluewater that I need for the type of fishing I do, I'm just trying to help. Saying that if I could have stretched the budget a bit to a 5.3 I would have, but it would have been a little heavy for me anyway.

Cheers, welcome aboard!!!

Saco, welcome aboard. I represent the Gentlemen Anglers here. I am surrounded by Philistines, who throw dead prawns overboard and expect to catch fish. This group is led by Giffo, who couldn't catch a cold in winter. However, he "works for the gummint" so has about 70 hours a week more than you and me to fish.......... badly.

I hope you get your Brumby. They sound more useful than Giffo, but then so is a condom.

Hi sacobeans, welcome to the forum. I had a 4.75 Quinnie before my current 5.3 Poly.
You will find the Poly more comfortable on the water.
I don’t know what the max hp on the 4.8 is, but whatever it is put one on. They are heavy and need all the grunt they can get.

Cheers polyfrank

Hi Sac, just saying hullo, can't really help with the 4.8 as haven't had much to do with them.
Until just recently there was a new one (centre console) for sale at Fishermans Warehouse at Marks Point, which they sold at cost (or less) due to it sitting there so long.
Sorry, I'm still not much help to you am I? Shut up Doug.
Performance-wise, don't go smaller than 80hp. I go out to the FAD and the 100 metre line (17 to 20 Kms) out from Swansea all the time in my 4.55, but it can be a long trip home if the wind comes up. Still never felt worried, just wet.

Hey Sac,

Everyone is always putting the boot in poor old Doug... giving him stick, taking the piss and such like, but you shouldn't listen to them.

Personally I want to be just like Doug when I grow up.....

I mean a wealthy, retired fly fishing ledgend on the sunshine coast.... not a quarrelsome, crotchety bugger with a lectric scooter and a single malt addiction.....

Giffo

This group is led by Giffo, who couldn't catch a cold in winter

How are your fishing reports coming Doug, they have been a bit thin on the groundlaugh1

Saco, you will realise that your thread on here can get hijacked, so don't stress over it.

sacobeans
14-08-2010, 20:44
Not stressed at all Giffo. I'm quite enjoying the good natured banter between you (and it seems others) and Doug. Having said that Doug?s wit is impressive so as a newbie I intend to sit on the side lines and enjoy a show that seems to have some humorous history.

On a more serious note, here are some questions:

Firstly Keith P has mentioned a showcase section. Where I am at present I can?t find any such link. When I googled it I was taken to a seemingly different page to this but it wouldn?t let me sign in and seemed like an old site.

Secondly, I currently have a pretty impressive pioneer stereo system in my quinnie. The speakers are screwed in on the sides to the marine ply. Is there any issue screwing speakers in the poly?

Thirdly, I have a kill tank in the floor of the quinnie. Can I do the same in the poly?

Finally, I live on the water so would appreciate any tips in relation to keeping the brumby on the water, for example as to whether to get a cover, what type etc.

Regards,
Sac

Hey Sac

see if this works

http://www.polyboatowners.com/2010/vb/showthread.php?t=365

should be sweedens rig in "my boat showcase"

I have a kill/live tank in my brumby, it sucks water in through a pump out the back and drains into the rear bilge, where it is sucked out with the big auto bilge.

Your sound is better being wired into a console/cast deck or something like. I recon you could screw it directly to the internal i'd think it's easier the other way.

Im in the same boat as you (so to speak) keeping it on the water. I have only just got it but ill keep you posted on any developments.

And if you want to meet the boys in there natural habitat (full'O piis and bad manners) drop into the chat room on a tuesdy eve, thats where the real action takes place. I have to spend most evenings in the corner, on dougs orders, but he usually lets me make a few poorly spelt, grammatically incorrect comments befor I'm sent away.

chin
15-08-2010, 15:59
I don't think you will be able to have a kill tank in the floor Sac, unless you dispense with the underfloor fuel tank option. That would leave a nice big trench under the floor, but the underfloor fuel tank is a must I reckon.

Not sure how you will go with finding a cover for the boat while it is on the water, do you have one on the Quinny?
I store mine on it's trailer with a cover from BIAS, but the straps go under the boat. You may just have to remove all your electronics after each trip, as I do, it's not a hassle. The boat and motor will look after themselves, just tilt the motor up. (Auto bilge pump would be essential though)

P.S. anti-fouling mixed in with plastic in the poly hull during manufacture is an option now.

G'day Sac, with regard to your cover question - we got a cover made for ours to keep the dust out on gravel road trips that uses the lip on the deck edge (someone insert a nautical term here?) and bungee cord that pulls tight around to the back. I can see this being able to put on while at anchor but you may have to put some breathing holes in it otherwise the trapped moist air may start stuffing with your electrics. Ours is made of some sort of vinyl. Can attach pics if you need them but hopefully you get the idea.

Instead of a kill tank, you could get a mackerel size esky by tropical eskies. then freeze saltwater in cordial bottles (Saltwater lasts longer). use cordial bottles as they have handles and are easier to pick up when covered in blood n guts.

When you get out to your spot, put some water in the esky (ice slurry), then as fish come aboard, dispatch them and slit their throats and throw in the esky. When you are done fishing, wash the fish with a deckhose, wash the cordial bottles and empty/wash the esky, then just replace the fish and some fresh water and you're all good.

Just my 0.02c but requires a deck hose and a decent bilge pump, unless you hold the fish over the side and spray them there.

Another quick tip is using cordial bottles to store garfish. fill them up with dead gar (remove the poo first by pushing your thumb along from stomach to poo-hole). Fill the bottle with gar, then fill the remainder with saltwater and freeze. Just remember to leave a good hour or so to thaw it out properly.

Hi polyfish, welcome to the forum.
Watch out for the piss takers, they can be a nuisance at times.
“pumerstone” I take it that is pumerstone passage at Bribie. That’s where I fish, not so much in the passage, but in the bay. Was going to fish the passage yesterday morning (Friday) on a falling tide for flathead.
Perfect weather all week and then it pissed down all day Friday, so I didn’t bother.
Do you go off Spinnaker Sound?

I dont know about that mate,

There are hundreds, nay, thousands, nay MILLIONS of sites and forums and whatnot out there that are more or less devoid of pisstakers.... Boring as Batsh!t. Those of us that frequent PBO do so not just in spite of the piss takers, but largely because the taking of the piss is what makes it fun and interesting and sets it apart from the hoi poloi of internet fishing forumry.

or maybe thats just me?? i dont know.

Yeah mate, plus you can pull out a single gar as required, then at the end of the day put some more water in (if you have gar left!) and re-freeze for next trip, get a few trips out of them.

Hi mate, I like you, had a quinny which was recently in sold awaiting the arrival of my new 4.1 Challenger in September??? Anyway I based my purchase solely on the research I have conducted over the best part 2 years. All there is to read has been read and whilst I'm yet to experience a poly boat on the water, the only negative comments I have encountered have been from the non believers ie 'the old school thinking types' or from the disgruntled tinny owners who bought the wrong boat. I have spoken to several poly owners and others who have had the bennefit of experiencing one on the water and for fishablity and to say that are impressed would be an understatement. THATS GOOD ENOUGH FOR ME- BRING ON SEPTEMBER...
