With the benefit of hindsight I would have spent my cash with a differant dealer, but its bloody hard when you live hundreds of km,s from anywhere. A nine hour round trip (at my expense)to punch the right info out of em can only happen so often.

Any way,

I don,t have an hour meter on my brand new suzuki 4 stroke. Evidently the motor is supposed to start beeping at service intervals, not satisfactory.I do have a brand new Lowrance HDS5 sounder/GPS combo. Can you somehow hook up the motor to the HDS and get engine hours?? Or can I just fit an hour meter?? I am real low brow with tech stuff so please bear that in mind,

cheers

G'day Highway,

An aftermarket hour meter should cost about a hundred bucks, and is easy as pie to install I'm told. You just have to fit it, then it plugs into your control unit which your (or a) suzi dealer should tell you the coulor wire that it connects to. It just works by clocking the time that the key is turned on. I didn't get one with me e-tec either so I am about to install one myself.

Cheers

I have a 175 suzy and a lowrance gps ,i have the interface that comes up on the gps screen .It tells you the hours and fuel usage (liters per hour ,klms per liter and at that speed you are doing how much fuel you would use to get to a selected way point .)It cost me $180 fitted in brissy.

Your tacho has a built in hour meter if you want to save some money.

Exactly right, read the owners book. The tacho needle goes up for several seconds after turning the key on.
Unless you clock up a lot of hours, you will probably be changing the oil by the calender anyway, not by hours.

Highway - I had the same problem (worse actually because I also didn't have a fuel guage), but went the more technical route and installed an NMEA 2000 network that the suzuki engine interface connects to. A little more expensive, but you get all the data steveb talked about and I'm really happy with it.

I believe the cabling is available in Australia now, but you can read about my efforts to get it installed (and some screenshots of the results) in the thread on my boat here:
