Well did the poly proud in average conditions. Started out blowy 15-18 SSE then dropped back by lunch for a bit of glass out.

Managed some lovely kidney crusher kaygees, and a bit of mixed bag of demersals. Put back three < dhu-veniles and some 10kg+ samsons. A bit of fun had.

Ended up with a 560mm kaygee that won the $500 prize in the comp to my deckie Deano. Well done mate. A top day had by all.

Go the polycraft, just gotta knock up those gunwhale baffles to direct the spray back overboard as again she took some water over the sides and i'm sure that's where it's coming now as I actually watched it gushing in. I mean who in their right mind makes gunwhales concave so they drain into the boat ?? Oh well

Cheers all,
Ado

Where abouts did you go when you went out? I dont know the rocky area so would be good to do a Google earth reccie. (oooh look Doug, military word!!)

So now time for some interpretation work

Kaygee = ? King george whiting?
Demersal = ??

and as for those stupid polyboat designs... what can you do? lol

sorry dave. Yes Kaygee = king george. Demersal is a term our lovely WA fisheries department uses to describe our primo bottom dwelling species like WA dhufish, pinkies, baldchin etc..Soon we won't be able to catch them if their researchers get their way.
there is a fait bit of naval water in rockingham funny enough, garden island is the military base of the west and we launch not far from there and head out wide 30km is a usual 1 way trip distance offshore, kind of back of rotto as people say to get to 50m line...oh and it gets windy !!!

not true mate
we can have demersals next year but no more than 3.5 kg for the whole year- fillet and release it sounds like

WA fisheries is at a major cross road- the stock of most prize fish is at the brink of extinction- but buying a $30 boat fishing licence is gonna stop it, the gvnmt says- if they at least used this funding for breeding research but no - it is spent on working out how old a dhui or pinkie is by looking at the ear bones!!!!!!!!

yes sir u caught the last dhui in WA but we can tell u it was 17 yr and 3 months and 2 days

The IFAC paper and the resultant Integrated Fisheries Management (IFM) position which allocates a share of the resource to the Recreational sector is undergoing vigerous debate at the moment - not a done deal.

The funds from the license fees do not go purely on research - they will be allocated to a number of initiatives. Recfishwest is working with the Minister and Fisheries to ensure this - restocking (bara in Lake Kununurra), artificial reefs, education, compliance, facilities; are just some of the propositions put forward.

Interesting times but a complex and difficult issue to work through to try and ensure recreational anglers have something to angle for and places to go.

Won't mention the election and the Greens policy - oops I just did laugh1

Really going off topic here, but.....

Restocking Barra in Lake Kunnunurra??? that seems a bit of misdirection. Rather that spending money on "restocking" why cant they use that money on developing a barra friendly fish ladder, or whtever they call them. I know they have had terrible failure in the past in different areas by installing salmon stairs (or whatever they are called ) which are entirely ineffective on barra, but surely there must be a barra friendly technique to naturally restock from the lower ord??

Just me ranting but it seems that continually spending money on stocking a water body the size of lake kununurra is a futile endevour, particularly when there is so much good barra groud in the area. And thats not going to help Ado down south, where they need the most help to get onto good fish, AND where all the revenue is going to come from.

restock lake Kununurra wtf

I believe a fish ladder was designed - that also stopped crocs from using it but the cost was prohibitive.

The opportunity to grab some fingerlings (excess stock) came up, so they were grabbed - good long term move I think.

Down south will get their share I reckon over time but a macro approach that focuses on the whole State is the way to go long term.

piratehighjack - apologies. no more from me on this.
