Hi Everyone

Just re-registered - Its been a long time since I was on - moved back to the east coast and living up Goldie these days.

Anyways very excited to have been to the Brisbane Boat Show last weekend. Yes I saw the new Polycraft Runabout in the flesh. Spoke to the nice Rep from Polycraft for ages. First I will say YAY - finally Polycraft have listened and built a runabout version for all those in the southern states who need protection from the elements. Our 4.55 Frontrunner was not the ideal trout fishing machine with the wet ride. Well I've seen the thread about the new runabout - besides looks there are some issues. No split windscreen makes anchoring a nightmare. Also you need to be a contortionist to get anything out from under the front nose storage bins - I'm small and I struggled. You can stand on the nose to fish however I think some further reinforcement would be required as the poly deck may sag over time. You look directly through the screen as they have lowered the front seat pods over our old model. Great for protection....maybe not so good when screen is covered in salt spray and driving into the setting sun. At least its a step in the right direction. Now when they bring out the 12 foot v nose boat they will have finally filled out the model range.

As we have seen a number of other plastic boats have been produced in the smaller sizes, DURAPLAS, PIRAHNA just to name a few. The Haines Group gave up on the Mac/Ensign range from NZ (We use to have a Mac 3.6). Bushman Stubbies have quite a following but no longer in production.

Now one manufacturer that I have been keeping my eye on is Smartwave from NZ. They have had a 2.5 and 3.5 model here in Oz for a year or so now. I did some research on these ages ago and posted the pics of their upcoming cuddy models. There was youtube footage on their 4 m runabout etc. Well I met the boss at the show and spent some time with him. They ditched the 4 m model as they weren't that happy with the stern boyancy. So instead of rushing new models they have been working hard on designing the new boat and I am happy to see that the centre console is finally here.

Even more exciting is the sports cuddy cabin will be coming shortly. And the boss man assures me that their new website is about to go up shortly also. For more info on their boats there is a UK website that sells them

http://www.marinerevolution.co.uk/news.htm

And a good review already

http://www.silverdalemarine.co.nz/show?POSTING_ID=652&CATEGORY_GROUP_ID=0#posting_top

There isn't alot of info as yet but I have been scanning for pics etc and it is a great looking boat. The 3.5 m has already got plenty of good reviews and here's hoping this will translate to the new big model.

Yes we still have our runabout tin can (I do have a poly Kayak and Surfski so I haven't defected). Fiscal insanity has prevented us from upgrading up to now, but I have to say I think I'm glad to have waited.

Enough of my blahing on....its been a while so I've been saving it all up - and I just had to share the goss from the show.

Cheers

Welcome back Waxski.
Did the runabout at the boat show have a life sized Barby-doll bolted to the port seat?

Hey Paul,

welcome back and thanks for the updated info on another range of poly material boat. Its getting a bit stale around here with just the PC range!

They are a LOT lighter than the polycrafts ... single skin vs dual. I wonder how that would affect the ride? It would be nice if someone could do a side-by-side evaluation.

"single skin vs dual"

Will, in their You-tube videos they say they're double-skinned?????

I thought I recognised the river in the videos - it's the Tay in Scotland. I was born in Dundee and those boats are made in Tayport which is on the south side of the river.

That's TWO famous things that have come from that area [Giffo, insert rude remark here Only Two things come from Tayport Boy!... steers and queers, and we know which one you are!!! ]

Giffo couldn't have done that red bit, so it must be an administrator or moderator abusing their power (as apposed to just abusing themselves)

Own up!

I actually checked this, as I had my own doubts:

Don't try and get smart with me!

to set against in some relation, esp. as to demonstrate a comparison or contrast: to oppose advantages to disadvantages.

Think this one fits the context better! :)

Well, you know what they say about assumption :)

Interesting then that they are double skinned @ 12mm and still almost half the weight of the poly? Something doesn't make sense ??

Hmmm, maybe it's 12mm total so each skin is 6mm? That kinda makes sense with the weight ... 350kg vs 540Kg

Not that my poly technology knowledge is going to help me here.. But there are varying densities of plastic..

Maybe a different light weight low density plastic being used?

I didn't see any outright admission... But definately at minimum a windup..
Shocking, don't you thinK?
IF true, I don't even find it surprising..

Its taken me ages to find these pics so I just had to share them. This cuddy cab is my favourite....with your feet hanging out a bit I was told you can sleep in the cabin. Can't wait for the real pics of this cuddy to come up.

The black boat looks nice, I like the transom.
In the second pic looking down the length of the RHS, you can see the bow in the gunnell, typical plastic!

And the use of the checker plate is a good idea.

Hmmmmm, jury is out on this one!
Would like to see it laden in a bit of chop, me thinks its going to be wet just like most poly boats!
They just cannot get past the bath tub effect!doh

Yeah I know Triumph have worked it out, but they arent the standard plastic boat are they?

Dont like the "old Polycraft" waves in the side panels?????(agro)

Checker plate is only there for the bling, would rather see plastic infill sections with inbuilt ribs for stimulation, um, strength I meant strength!

The transom looks like a Tupperware assortment, you dont really like that surely?wtf

I don't think it's a wobbly RHS Dave, optical illusion due to the top of the gunwale not being a straight line.
The aluminium bolt-on section of transom looks like a welders nightmare, although appears solid enough. I also like the full height transom, even if it does intrude into the cockpit.
Aluminium floor fill-ins have to be better than the plastic ones in PC boats, which weigh a ton.
Would love to take one for a thrash.

Dave
05-09-2010, 17:09
I take it back, the transom is a nightmare, I looked at the photo of the grey one as well.
On my initial look, i thought it was all flat, not those strange angles etc.

Chin, have you been drinking again? Read the first line of your post again...lol.... its not wobbly, its just not straight...

chin

No Dave I certainly have not been drinking again.....I'm STILL drinking.

Wandered into Townsville BCF looking for Chin Guards and tripped over a 3.5 ish SmartWave boat :D
And it seemed to be very neat and tidy little unit.. It lacked the sheer agriculturousness of the Polycraft, which I have come to love.

No Chin Guards in stock, but the other half was not amazed to see $200 disappear out of the budget anyway. Love BCF for specials..

(PS My cost per kilogram of caught fish must know be running around $10000 per kilo surely.)

Bills Marine have a couple of these new Smartwave boats in their yard in Cairns. They have the little 3.5mtr Punt and the 4.9mtr set up as Cntr Console, they look alright too.
