View Full Version : DF60A Upgrade Part 2: Fast Tail Hydrofoil

Well, that didn't take long did it? Less than two weeks after putting the new Suzi 60A on the back and fiddling already.. Typical me.

Reason is, the old DF50 was really improved by putting a Solas Laser Foil (http://www.solas.com.au/html/laser_foils.html) acquired at the 2006 Brisbane Boat Show. So I was pretty happy when I was given a Fast Tail Aluminium Hydrofoil (http://www.fastcompanymarine.com/fast_company_technical.php) for free.. Well, Rob from Burdekin Marine bundled with the engine upgrade, so maybe not that free, but he reckons they are good gear.

Anyways, as you can see from the pictures below I've just installed a Fast Tail on the DF60A after much consideration..
This design is certainly different from say the SE300's.. Instead of massive Bat Wings out the side, this design seems to concentrate on extending the cavitation plate area out the back. And unlike the Solas Laser Foil (and others), it has no vertical component at all (completely horizontal... flat.. boring).

Also the other wierd thing is it mounts underneath the original cavition plate, which is different to every other type I've seen. It comes with a cutout for the Zinc trim thingy. But I did have to extend this so I didn't cover some wierd port on the Suzi.

I'm hoping to get out of the hole quicker, and plane at a lower speed, be more fuel efficient, better ride, and to quiet down the wake(for trolling high speed lures). Lot to ask? We'll see.

As soon as I get a chance, I'll get out test, take piccies and get back to you guys.

But in the mean time can I get a poll on cavitation plate height versus bottom of keel.. To help me with the next step..
For those without an answer to the above, don't panic I have included the standard PolyBoatOwners forum answer as well..

The next two things to play with :-

Height of motor
Re-evaluate prop choice

Bit of foam in this picture, but 60 isn't as messy as the ol' 50??

Monstrous lookin' thing isn't it...

Due to wierd exhaust hole, I had to do some custom cutting out.. Neat enough I think.

Mick, that zinc thing is your sacrificial annode.

Re the other port or intake in front of the annode, I was told to put tape over that when I flush the motor so that it takes more water into the ports that you cover with the flush out ears.

Looks good though. Mine extended further out, but is more rectangle than dart shaped like yours.

Will be interesting to see the results.

Posting at midnight Dave??? Oh, hold on... I'm doing it too..

Mick, that zinc thing is your sacrificial anode.
Yeah i know, replaced the one on the ol' 50 and discovered it's second function..
Steering pulls like a bitch if you don't angle the trim to offset side-thrust..

See I know a thing or two about boats. It's just at the moment I can't remember what the second thing is? :D
Re the other port or intake in front of the anode, I was told to put tape over that when I flush the motor so that it takes more water into the ports that you cover with the flush out ears.
So I'm guessing it's a water/exhaust gas port then, which might contribute to slip in the prop. That's where the exhaust through hub concept excells. Must be the excess required water, not required for the telltale.

I thought you got rid of your Poly Dave and only had a jet ski left.. Or did I miss something? But you did have a 4.55 Cuddy like me didn't you?(or is that I have a 4.55, like you did?) So which brand foil was/is it? Or did you hack a piece of metal into shape yourself?
Will be interesting to see the results.
Agreed.. And for me it'll be fun too. yippy

I tell you what mick, that too me looks so clean. With my old foil on the back i had so much spray it looked like a cross between a bass boat rooster tail and a fan boat, there was shit going everywhere. I am getting an ally one made alot like yours, the 'Poly Arse Lifta 4000'

wtf wot do u think my name is?? Doug??? laugh1I spend some of my money unlike a certain tight arrssed scotchman!

I bought the Permatrim and fitted it myself. Easy job, blow torch, 4lb hammer and a couple of rusty 6 inch nails... job done!

anything between 5mm above or under is good
instead of playing with prop pitch i found a 4 blader worked even better for me
keep in mind when u start to reprop
dave mamazing what a hammer a plier and a bit of wire can do --i m not allowed to use the blow torch till i m older

That's harsh that is..

@DvrDve

Yeah an aluminium 4 blader would be my preference.. From Solas of course

Aluminium cause SS's stiffness only counts when you're using large HP... my 60's a bit small to be flexing props.. And I've already seen the damage your prop shaft can sustain with SS.. The prop didn't look that good either.. If the guy's SS prop had been alloy it would have absorbed more shock, and done way less damage.. oh and the prop would cost less to replace..
I think there is a little bit of a tendency to over-rate SS props... They seem to be a "hot item" to stick on any boat.. Cause they are shiny, sexy looking thing compared to alloy..

That's enough rambling there...

Mick I'm pretty sure the port adjacent to the trim tab/anode is purely an intake port for water.

Then not covering it up is a good idea... I think you're right about it's function

Tested the new setup this evening... Wind is starting to drop..

Terribly disappointed. The boat might actually be slower..

Need to test again in more light
