Team,

Have had the boat off the road (so to speak) for a few weeks putting the new transducer in the hull, doing some rewiring and a general clean up. Stuck the transducer straight to the outer hull (via the inspection hole at the back of the boat) with some sikaflex, let it cure for a week. Finally got the tub in the water this arve, turned on the sounder (Northstar 660) and was VERY pleasantly surprised to see an exellent picccie of the bottom. Was a far better picture of the creek floor than i have ever got from the rear mounted ducer, right up till the point i got into the throttle to get the boat on the plane........then nothing. :( So back to the drawing board on that one. Will take some photos later in the week of where it is placed, just for others reference.

Whitto,

I would say the through hull transducers would have to be as close as possible to stern of the boat. I want to try a PUK style transducer in near future, which I will place in between the 2 skins. I had fairly good readings from the rear mount transducer when damaged, which I threw on the floor of the boat in duscust one day when it struck a rock and snapped off.

Sorry bbayjohn, havent been on a puter for a few days. As in my first post, it is a 600 watt transducer from a Northstar 660. Will get a picture for you when time permits this week. I have left it where i originally put it at the back of the boat, as it does work reasonably well as long as the water is not too rough. I have been taking the kids fishing in smooth water a lot lately, and it works a treat up the creeks and in the harbour. Will post photos later in the week.

Thanks Whitty,
I also have a 530 hull and would like to see how your transducer is mounted.
When you say Thru hull does it shoot tru the hull or you had to drill it out to mount it. Im thinking shoot thru is what you have. What size is your 115 motor ( 2 or 4 stroke)? Mine is a 90 honda 4 stoke & im thinking maybe with a lighter 2 banger, more of the boat may leave the water on the plane. That being the case your transducer may need to go back further. Or maybe its the bubbles caused when on the plane. Eather way there's no clean water running under the sounder. hmm maybe i should try mounting my external 'ducer lower and see what happens. I get a great pic now untill about 12kph and then the screen is all green with clutter but at least i have bottom lock even at top speed. I recently rewired the ducer so it wasnt running along side power cables and that got rid of a lot of clutter. It used to cluter at 7kph on 2oohz
and 80hz was unreadable with the motor turned on.

Anyone else have a clear screen at top speed and where is your transducer mounted? photos needed plz help

Well im back to have a look at that transducer of mine.
I think I found the problems and may have the solution.
Just looking for your expert opion.

At 5knots I used to get a lot of clutter on 200khz and 80khz was totaly unreadable with the motor running. Solution moved cables away from other power cables.

Now I have a much clearer picture up to 7knots.

You will see in the pic is a water pick up for deck wash thru hull, just infront of the transducer.

Possible solution
1 move transducer to another cleet line away from water pick up point.

2 mount trasducer on a slide plate to find cleaner water deeper in the water
Can I expect to get a clearer pic from my sounder ?

Or should I look at a shoot thru hull transducer or mount Plastic Flush Mount Thru the Hull Transducer ?

Hi BBay

I mounted my transducer in the middle of the flat of the between the cleat lines slightly to the right of where you have the metal bracket.

but I have mine on the port side.

I get good bottom in 50m at 20Kt no problem at all & up the river at 30+Kt I still get good bottom in 5m .

Thanks Pete,
Reason to be on the starboard side is becaue of the rotation of the prop and it pushes bubles up to port side. I do have great bottom lock but in midwater on the plain is clutter city. Is your sounder colour? Got any pics of your sounder underway?

Anyone got any advice on how they overcome the cleets to get the best out of there sounder?

Mine is on the Port side as the Starboard side was a bit warped & the sounder wouldnt sit right.

Its a Lowrance HDS 5X.

I will take some pics of where its mounted & get some of it under way next time Im out if I remember
