View Full Version : Self servicing!
Any one here do there own servicing on there motors ???
I do my own cars, have done for years, thinking bout doing my own 100 hr service,
Just had both oils and impeller done at 60hrs/3 months ago, so i figure it should only need minor stuff done,
I cant warrant paying someone $450 to drop oil and change plugs, seriously there is more work in a car serice and its under half that price!
Zutta, we service our own motors. Nothing too difficult about it. Manufacturers just frighten us into having big HP motors serviced by their reps.

Now that my engine is out of warranty I will be doing all my own servicing. I have been doing extra oil changes half way between the scheduled services anyway. My engine has just over 300hrs and I have had it serviced by the dealer and by a mobile guy and they have both overfilled the sump by quite a large amount. I just had to have the Idle control valve removed and cleaned out as she kept stalling. Apparently the main cause of the idle valve clogging up on the suzukis is too high an oil level in the sump. How hard can it be to get the levels right. The manual says the motor takes 5.5 litres with the filter so that is what I put in and the level sits right on the top mark on the dipstick. Obviously any thing needing a computer diagnosis will need to go to a dealer but everything else is easy.

i am living proof its not true.(whistle)
hey zutta, i was living in alice and the closest place to buy my 50 4 st zuk was darwin so when i got my motor i asked about servicing the motor myself and they said no worries as they send motors to some very remote places and cant expect people to bring them in for every service. All i did was send the book to them and they stamped it.
I did all my own services and only got a dealer to do one at 350 hrs cause i wanted them to put a computer on it and do a check.
Oil and filter change
change plugs.
impellor change
tune up.
diagnostics $350 all up. i thought was good value. cheers

bloody hell i need a new boat i can fix the motors without a bloody laptop- am showing my age i quess
Guys
As many have indicated, how easy is an outboard to service. Son in law forks out $400/annum to get his 2 stroke 30 HP serviced. Has little idea of what he is obtaining for his outlay which appears to contain a $300 labour component. I can fully service my 25HP 2 stroke in 30 minutes, water pump impeller exchange in another 30. "Money for old rope."
Paying for servicing may be is justified for the technical disadvantaged, however who doesnt have a set of tools these days when the chain stores can sell a set of reasonable quality ring and o/e spanners for $10 a set.
