I had an RDO today & managed to coax a couple of mates to bring their Kayaks to Lake Barrington.

We peddled or paddled about 14Ks for the day & got this.

About 80cm of Brown Trout that went 3.2Kgs gutted.

When we got back to our launch point we caught up with some other fishos in their power boat & they reckon it would have to be one of the biggest brown trout they had seen.

Very nice PP, I see it has the hooked mouth that old brown trout get.
I think when they get that old they are called Doug trout.

Leaving aside the gratuitous insults for the moment, I'd suggest that was a "spent" old fish, Pete. Looks like he's done his stuff up the streams and has come back to the lake to recuperate. Just like Giffo really.

Or he is a VERY old fish and is just buggered. Just like me really.

Good catch all the same , but did he fight much?

I suspect Tassie trout all marry their sisters, but in NZ a trout with a hooked jaw like that would be a boy (in fact an old man). You sure you weren't seeing "boys' roe"?

Yes your right their Doug, it is an old man trout. Have seen DVD’s pictures etc.
But PP’s is the first one I’ve seen in the flesh so to speak.

"Yes your right their Doug" or "Yes, you're right there, Doug"

'Course I'm right. Haven't made a mistake since September 23rd 1973.

So what happened September 23rd 1973? Doug.

Let me guess….You got married.
I got married 12th August (the glorious 12th) 1972.

Take your new girl friend fishing, if she likes it, shag her brains out.
In the boat?

Definitely looks like a male fish to me as well Pete. Shame it was in such poor nick; had it been in good condition, it would probably have been well into double figures (I still measure my trout in pounds - they sound bigger).

Well done on catching it from the yak though.

I agree Barry but it had to sacks of little orange balls in it that look like roe to me . . . . . . . . . . .

Yes dad has a "Monster" on his wall that is about 700mm long but about 3 times the girth of my 800mm one.

I dont know what a pound is. . . . . . . . as a kid I can remember being measured in stone & now every thing is in Kgs

I would be lucky to have caught 30 trout ever so this is going to be hard to top.

Certainly hard to argue that it is a male when it quite definitely does appear to have been carrying roe!

Edit: I wonder if it was an old brood stock Atlantic salmon? Edit 2: Since they are fed pellets daily, fish which wouldn't survive in the wild because of a deformity survive longer. Could also explain the poor condition as the brood stock Atlantics generally don't feed in the wild as the pellets don't appear twice a day!
